I've got the same dilema, I don't think the black does it for me 100% more than I like Silver. It (Black) looks good on the blue on some angles, some times, but its like an internal debate, do I like it or do I not. On white or Grey, Black is a no brainer, but the blue its definitely is 50-50

I have been investigating getting the rims re-sprayed or powder coated either a gloss or satin gunmetal grey or titanium bronze and then getting the VW badges finished the same. I think that would be much nicer on Blue.

Can anybody shed light on whether to powdercoat or to re-spray ? and any recommendations of people to do it. Obviously quality and durability of the finish is the main goal, and not the price.

I would probably just say re-spray. But that's just because practically ALL wheels are spray painted. Most alloys are just a shade of silver paint with a clear coat. "Metal" finished wheels (such as Detroits) still have the clear coat. So for the sake of easy repair after you or your partner accidently scrapes a rim, just go the spray paint

There are lots of options available in Europe, and especially Germany, that do not apply here

Recall reading the same thread on rforum.co.uk, really don't see how the colour screen is worth those sorts of dollars.

Before you commit to refinishing your aluminium wheels make sure the refinisher will 'chromate or alodine' the raw material. It is almost essential if you want the coating to be durable; effectively turns the microscopic top layer from aluminium oxide (not easily adheared to) to zinc chromate (suitable to adhear with primer). Smile politely and look for someone else if your refinisher tries to convince you etch primers are adequate. I've manufactured many, many aluminium MTB frames/bikes for customers in an earlier life phase and know from hard experience they come back with easily scratched to substraight or lifting paint / PC if not chromated.

IMO, paint is more durable these days, has better colour options and luster. PC has lost the durability advantage it once had due to removal of toxic chemicals for environmental concerns.

A good operator for detail work (depending on the wheel) will be harder to find for PC too - rectification is a pain when the job to bad!!!

Paint is also eaiser to touch-up/repair.

Pay a visit to these guys in Botany.

    Wheel Centre Repairs P/L

They are ex-simmons wheels employees. One of the golfmkv guys has used them and he had a positive experience.

HMm....well the thing is...i cant remember whicch forum it was (it wasnt this one, but another VW one) where an aussie has bought a Golf R..........in tornado Red. Now THat colour wasnt given to us as an option as we only had the blue, white, silver, black or gray to choose from.

However, he ordered from barloworld 5 dock and they said after a few calls here and there (wasnt specific), he was able to get the Golf R in tornado red delivered here to Australia.

If thats the case, I'm thinking I wonder if there are options we can tick that arent commercially available to the general public? for e.g, i'd love to have keyless go and that colour MFD if that's applicable to our new Golf R's.....

Slightly OT, but when my dealer was entering my GTI order in the system, he said he could actually order the car with a cream leather interior. I wasn't actually jumping up and down for him to tick that box, but it does make one wonder... if the dealers get the codes in their software, what actually happens if they specify these options? Does a red light go on somewhere at VGA or Wolfsburg?

Funnily enough, one of my main reasons for not choosing an R was the unavailability of Tornado Red (all three of my previous new cars have been red - love that colour). If there's a way to get it, my upgrade path is a lock-in.

Yeah, i mentioned this on here the other day about this guy ordering the Tornado Red R, i also read it on another forum.

I have an Australian brochure for the Golf R32 and it lists the colours available, there is no mention of White being available yet there are a number of White R32's driving around. So how did they order these if it wasn't an official colour available in Australia? Maybe we can get other colours.

That'd be something different, can't say I've ever seen one. But DBP is still the best VW colour (much better than RB IMO), so not sure you can have an R32 without it!

Not sure about a red R though
