I don't believe you will get a straight answer, no one's arse is that sensitive. Anecdotally it appears that 18s provide a quieter and smoother ride. Those of us with ACC feel it provides a difference in ride depending what mode you have it in, those that don't seem not to miss it.

All that in mind it tends to be a preference based on your driving style and aesthetics ... much difference? probably not much but given that ACC appears to be standard in the range now it must be enough

    Thanks for the reply.

One other question, this can probably go in the Golf R thread if mods wanted to merge...

The stock seats. What are they like? I mean, I'd love to find a car with the Sport Seats option, or if not leather - but if I can't, I'd like to get the stock seats re-trimmed in alcantara and leather if they're actually a good seat.

    Cheers.

The seats are fantastic, I have the cloth in mine and very happy to have them, there was a long conversation about the benefit of leather or not but again it is down to personal taste and size of wallet ( given they were 3 grand or so option) I have had folk who have leather get into mine and comment on the difference and then get conflicted

They are well bolstered and hug you nicely, every time I climb into them I wish my lounge seats were this comfortable. They are not perfect and I find that after 4 hours in them my lower back could do with a rest but I don't do long haul that often.

I would not go to the effort of redoing the seats as it will be expensive and you have to o the rears as well.

Stock cloth seats are fine. I tried them and the leather and found the leather didn't hold my 1.78m, 80kg frame as well. I assume they are the same size, the cloth is just grippier.

Haven't tried 19s so no help there. I hardly ever use the ACC on mine though. Probably spends more than 90% in normal mode. Sport never. Comfort often feels too floaty for me at highway speeds. Only use it in town on very rough stuff.

    Steering problems

My almost 4 year old Golf R is having intermittent problems with the power steering. I've searched this forum but failed to find reference to this issue.

The problem is loss of the power steering briefly so that turning the wheel can be jerky with power steering off/on/off/on repeatedly. This happens when parking (idle and low revs) and only at the end of a drive, never when first starting and never when driving. Revving the engine seems to help. It first happened about 8 months ago but is getting more frequent and lasting longer.

As an intermittent and uncommon fault, it may be difficult to diagnose. I spoke to the service rep who said the power steering was electrical, but that doesn't fit with these symptoms. He was unable to offer any other suggestions/advice.

I'd be grateful for any information about this problem.

Yes the steering is electrically assisted so when the battery starts to go you end up with any number of weird problems, at 4 years there is a strong possiblity it is the battery especially as you say at idle and low rpm.
