So launch control does make a big difference - recorded a 5.0s once I'd figured out you need to have the brake pedal absolutely to the floor to engage the program.

    60-120 took 4.7s.

Times recorded on a Racelogic PerformanceBox.

Guess it really shows how lethargic the DSG is off the line in 'normal' circumstances.

I reckon the slow time is not so much the power of the car (or lack thereof) but rather the hesitation of the DSG. Next time I get a suitable opportunity I'll try the launch control method and see if that improves things.
The 118TSI doesn't have launch control, just home-grown talent on my part and a fantastic car

Launch control makes a HUGE difference. I reckon between two identical R's, one manual, one DSG, the manual would be quicker unless the DSG used launch control.

    Edit:
I just read your post properly. Good on you for getting the launch done. I'm stoked it came up exactly as I predicted

Is your TSI a manual or DSG? If it's a DSG, then - how on earth do you get the thing to launch that hard without a LC mode?

Sorry - I just re-read my own post and could have been far clearer.

On my first attempt I didn't have the brake fully depressed, so the car just bogged down against the brake as if it was an auto. Big waste of time - I don't think I even bothered finishing the run.

On my second attempt I must have pushed the down on the brake pedal a little harder and activated the LC mode just as I was about to lift off the brake, so the revs only just climbed above 2000rpm before launching. Resulted in a 5.4s 0-100 run.

Having figured out how the thing actually works I tried a 3rd time - hard on the brake, full throttle, release brake. 5.0s 0-100.

    Very well predicted indeed

I'm now happy to have a baseline from which to repeat the test once the mods begin in earnest.

You're right about the DSG / manual thing - especially at an intersection where you make a sudden decision that you need to move off as quickly as possible. In the manual it's a simple rev + clutch dump and you're off - in the DSG if you haven't planned ahead with the launch control you're a sitting duck for 1.5s whilst the gearbox thinks about what it's doing.

    DSG.

Just used Sport mode... oh and I have a SprintBooster, but everyone (who's never used one) says they're pointless

Connected to the car's ECU, not using GPS, etc.

    Cryptic but intriguing...

Just to confirm my thoughts about the R's relative performance, I ran through the PerformanceBox logs from my Polo at the Snowy Mountains 1000 a few weeks ago. The 0-100 times are irrelevant as the surface on the runway made it very hard to get a good launch with FWD, but the 60-120 times were interesting.

The Polo ran 5.6 sec 60-120, with about a 0.8 sec 'pause' with the gear change from 2-3. Assuming the DSG in the R handles that same change in about 0.1 sec, that's a 'comparison' time of 4.8 sec. So my initial thoughts about the R's performance were probably correct - the in-gear performance is roughly equal to my Polo in their respective current states of tune.

Can someone confirm for me if: Mk5 FSI Stealth Oil Catch Can Solution - is a complete solution for a MY13 Golf R? I'd rather not have the intake system gummed up with **** on such a nice car.

Also are there any VWWC discounts on their gear?

Have a look at Carformance's posts. Lots of stuff there: Carformance

(Not that you asked for an opinion, but I considered a catch can and then changed my mind after receiving advice from my mechanic. PM for details. I know a lot of Golf R owners on the forum do have catch cans.)
