    Some are satisfied with mediocrity

Besides from being at the dealership for freebies and the last service, had the DSG updated to latest version and had the BT updated to latest version.

    Updated BT is great btw

It pays to be on good terms with the Service Manager

Pity you have to put up with those idiots you take your car too

Golf R: Couple of questions for fellow owners

    Hi all

I've taken my R in for its 1st service today. I mentioned a couple of things that I wanted them to check, and naturally they're things that I can't replicate on demand. I was wondering though if anyone else has had similar things happen to them and have figured out what it was so I can inform the service team:

    1) 5th gear (manual). On occasions, when changing up from 4th to 5th (driving sedately, never happens when i'm up it) the gear selector seems to go 90% of the way into gear, but doesn't quite get in there. I have to pull it back to neutral, rev match (or else the synchros complain) and then it goes in fine. If I think about it and shift with a bit more gusto, it'll go in fine. And it only happens going into 5th. Is this common for this gearbox, or have I got a random gremlin? Has happened maybe 6 times in the year i've owned it, so hardly a huge issue.

    2) Sometimes when I come to a complete stop and have full lock on in prep of reverse parking, there's sort of a repetitive notchy noise that comes from somewhere under the bonnet. It actually sounds like when you have not quite got a car in gear and start releasing the clutch (I swear this is unrelated to point 1 and it happens when the clutch is fully engaged or even if it's in neutral). Thought maybe it was something power steering related, but these things are electric? Again, impossible to make it happen when I want to show someone, and only noticeable if I have the windows down and radio off.

Not expecting anyone to report the same things, but worth a shot!

Thanks in advance for your help.

^ In regards to your first point, this used to happen to my car occasionally when shifting into 5th gear. I have since fitted a Dieselgeek short shifter and it no longer happens. Perhaps the stock shifter gets hung up on something occasionally? I wouldnt worry about it - VW will probably make it worse by trying to fix it.

Can't help you with your 2nd point im sorry.

Yep I agree. Both things are so rare and hardly cause a headache, so i'm not pushing for either of them to be found and fixed by VW. Anyway, now that the car is through its first service and nothing has fallen off or exploded, it's time to start seriously considering some little tweeks I think. My Family stickers and neons ought to add 50kw easy I would have thought.

If your looking for more power then the absolute best bang for buck modification is a stage 1 tune. For $900, my advice would be to get a tune from DNA Tuning (sponsor on this forum). My car made 204kw at the dyno day on the weekend with a stage 1 DNA tune (plus intake and downpipe). Awesome value for money, good service and much more power than any other similarly tuned car there on the day.

Yep, I think a stage 1 tune is hard to go past for the money and a little taste test of things to come. i think my car, even at a year, is still too new for me to want to go doing anything serious with. the last 2 cars i've owned i've modded to varying degrees and whilst they give you huge satisfaction some of the time, on the whole there were changes that really shat me off on a day to day basis, so given this is the first new car i've ever owned, and one that cost me a bit, i'm hesitant to molest it too much just yet.

it's just upsetting that by the time i'm ready to upgrade i probably won't be able to buy what i want with a clutch pedal or a normal handbrake!

Well guess what SF, maybe I do have a Friday car because the new BT module they fitted doesn't always get recognized by the head unit

    Back to dealers Monday

Either the head unit or the module

Oh well, will give me a chance to get my jacket and hit them up for something else.

Sitting at mechanics getting wheels aligned and then off to that place I mentioned at noon
