Golf R Observations and Questions

I've noticed with the onset of the cold weather here in Canberra, particularly at night, my Golf R has been performing like a jet!

It got APR stage 1 tuned today thanks to the Canberra VW Centre, so it can only get better from here... I'm looking forward to a run up the Snowy Mountain highway mid Winter now.

I am interested in feedback on whether ACC is really worth it. I am keen on the R, but not at the expense of driver comfort. I do recognise that the R will definitely be a harder ride, but what has been the experience of 19" wheels with ACC? (or doesn't ACC do much for smoothing out the ride). Possibly 18" would be a better idea.

I have ACC & 19s. IMHO,ACC is a must and the 19s not so, but I liked the look of them. For the $hit roads in Brtisbane, 18s might be better

Some people have commented that the R on 19's without ACC is acceptable but it depends on what you are used to.

The R has a compliant ride unless you are used to floaty, soft cars like Commodores etc

You can always go aftermarket and soften the ride if you want too

It seems that if you are thinking of doing aftermarket mods then don't get ACC , but if you can afford it and will leave it stock, then why not get it? I have the 19's as well and have no trouble at all.

had an A4 (B6, APR Stg 1) and a Q5. Both relatively smooth rides, but not what I would call hard / sporty.

Essential is a strong word, my recommendation is to get it if you have both the opportunity and the budget will extend that far. Those that don't have it won't complain they don't but for those of us with it we appreciate it for a few reasons.

It has been debated at length on the forum but simply put the comfort setting makes it just that very smooth and comfortable which for long haul is excellent. However because you have the magic button when the feeling takes you and you want a more dramatic ride then hit sport, and the car changes from a subtle cruiser into a go kart. The steering get heavier and the whole ride stiffens up and coupled with a DSG in S mode you go hunting twisties.

Now the sell is over there are things to consider, if you like playing with your suspension then don't get it. It is more hassle than it is worth for coil overs etc etc.

Personally I love it and coupled with 18s suits my needs as well as allowing my to have 2 car experiences in 1

(should have also mentioned that I had another car a while back (Mazda 929) and the sport / comfort ride setting did absolutely nothing as far as I could tell. Fundementally different car of course (!), but always wary of suspension setting buttons... good to hear this one actually does something)
