The * button I believe also answers incoming calls. AFAIWT.

Doesn't for me, I use the buttons on the steering wheel

As do I, however VW told me so. Haven't tried it though. Will try this weekend.

No. Ray had a mkvi GTI arranged for review, but got cold feet and reviewed a Toyota corolla instead. Paid the GTI owner $5000 for his troubles though
