    I have just come up to 4,500 kms on my Golf R. The other day my check oil light came on. When I checked the dipstick the oil level was on minimum. I got some oil from the dealer and after adding 1 litre the level when the engine was cold read half way between min and max. After it is warm it reads closer to max.
    They dealer said it was quite normal and said...'German's use thinner oil" and "it uses oil when breaking in"...I tried not to be too dismissive or negative but in 4 years with my Evo 9 I never needed a drop of oil or with my Rex either.I will keep a close eye on it but this seems a bit excessive to me. When accelerating hard off the lights I have noticed some smoke behind my car and a friend suggested a turbo seal can lead to excess oil usage.
    Anyone have insights or experiences...it would be greatly appreciated.

    Each time I've been behind a VW that accelerates hard I've seen black smoke come out of it's exhaust (a MK5 Golf and a Jetta). Not sure if my car does the same, or what other circumstances contribute to it. The smoke never seems to go high enough for it to be visible in the rear view mirror.

    Black smoke = petrol which is normal with most cars if they floor the throttle.

    Blue smoke = oil burning.

    Sman - as for your car using oil, some Golf R's and GTI's tend to use oil, while others don't. Just keep an eye on your oil level every week or two. Have a look in the Polo GTI section of this forum - they have massive oil consumption issues.

    Drop in crankcase pressure causing coniptions with (probably) the PCV system.
    Don't check the oil with the engine running.

    Best way to check is on a flat area, before the first start of the day after the engine has sat at least 30 minutes to allow for oil drain-down. Doesn't really matter if it's hot or cold as long as you try & replicate the same conditions each time.

    Sounds odd. I don't think there's been any discussion about oil usage on this forum

    I thought the same but the reading showed oil very low and quite concerning, so on going to the manual to see what type of oil I should go get to top up indicate that it should only be done at operating temp. After doing this the measure was bang in the middle of the right dipstick measure.

    Should be right till the next service which is in a couple of thousand

    It's mainly about consistency in what datum you use when checking the level. eg: Don't do it cold this week & hot next week. I do mine when cold on a the wekend because it's convenient. I'm never overly worried about it being on full - I just want it to be somewhere between the marks.

    I can assure you that the dealership mechs haven't got time to wait 30 minutes for drainback & it's most unlikely they get the oil temp to NOT. I know when our service manager used to check the oil level after the road test he'd switch off the engine, pop the bonnet & check the level. His main concern was double checking that the mech had actually put some oil in rather than getting the dipstick level perfect.

    Hey Will, been wondering where you went.. yeah did a flip and had it tuned, won't look back. She is so smooth in power delivery now and that DSG is just like silk. That really is it for me, have no want to take her any further as it is a weapon on the road and I have been ducking the speeding fines only by luck.. we have so many cameras now that there is just no point.

    If I remember you were getting the Brake calipers done RED .. did this happen if so I need to see the piccies.. a real redback

    SF, I'm with you on further enhancements and no won't be going red callipers.

    A word of warning to all regarding wheel alinement and balancing as set from the VW factory... I'm aware there has been talk about this topic, in fact prior to delivery and only after reading on this forum that factory balance can be out causing excessive tire wear, I confirmed with my Dealer that they had re-balanced all four wheels.
    Last week I pulled out of my office, got about 20 meters up the road and heard a god awful 'bang'... thought I had dropped my tranny. pulled over and found right front down. limped into the Bridgestone dealer across the street. They confirmed right front damaged beyond repair after only 18k!!! I checked left front and found it too was down to steel on the inside, same as right. The wear on both tires was on the inside, virtually unseen unless I went under the car or turned the wheel to inspect.
    Big bucks to replace the 19" - 619 each!!!
    Called dealer and was told VW would not accept responsibility. Dealer called Bridgestone and they confirmed front end alinement was out by 2.5mm, causing toeing out. Also confirmed most likely was factory setting, which of coarse it was as I hadn't hit anything.. pot hole etc.
    Dealer called me back and confirmed once again that the front end was within spec and VW were not taking responsibility.
    I wrote a letter to dealer principle reminding him I own 7 VW's including most recent 2012 Toraug.
    Local Dealer Garry Crick, came to the party with one new tyre, I paid for second... Decent outcome from a great dealer.
    My point in this diatribe is to again warn ALL that you must get wheels re-alined after first 5K.
    And have to say VW has come down a notch or two regarding customer relations.

    All else regarding my R still fantastic... lovin the car
