My wife calls herself a Golf Widow and the R the Widow Maker.. go figure.. but she loves it and every now and again comes and asks to just "take it for a run"

Hey Candyman, had to run up the coast again yesterday.. effortless.. just as you described it..

Not that it matters but all that from a vehicle returning 8.5 l/100 km and only 2,000km on the clock.

The wife fights to get in the drivers seat, she loves it.
Careful with those fuel figures. People will tell you that they are impossible and that the R drinks fuel like a semi trailer.

But I get similar ones and believe you.

I use mine for long distance stuff, highways and country roads mainly. I agree - such a well planted car that just eats miles. I did the Melbourne - Sydney via Cooma run in a day and got out without any aches and pains despite doing close to 1000km in a day

Well.... it's not hard to achieve that when you're driving from Sydney to Brisbane.
Although, it's not achieving the 6.8L/100km that it's mean to with "extra urban" trips...
... or the <5L/100km that the APR Stage 3 GTI did on the same trip...

Golf R in AWD uses more fuel than FWD shock.

That was an average over the whole trip, 3 days of city driving as well and brand new.

Uses more than our GTI, not surprising but it is a far better vehicle in all respects and is AWD, not surprising either.

    Yes, well duh.
As has been said over and over, the Golf GTI meets its fuel consumption figures quoted. As does most of the Golf range, and Polo range and Jetta range etc.
The Golf R doesn't. This is why so many people are surprised by the R's fuel consumption.

I don't understand what you don't understand about that? It's not really difficult to understand

My unmodified (at the time) Subie XT at the same km's on similar trip averaged 15 l/100 km

It eventually averaged 10 after 20,000 km

We did get the R down to 7.3 on the freeway. Not bad for a brand new engine.

Helluva nicer place to be versus our XT as well

If one buys a turbo awd performance car based on green credentials alone they are doing something wrong.

I reckon I could get mine to around the 7-7.5 if I wanted. Cannot be bovvered. Best I have seen is on a long run hovering at around 7.1. Got bored and thrashed the pants off it. More fun that way.

Just because you are not achieving it, doesn't mean that it is not achievable.

In fact, fuel consumption figures are rarely equaled in the real world. Just like C02 figures. It's a label to help the eco-fundies feel smug about how much good they are doing.
