Put the charger on the car and 18hrs later, started it and the battery was receiving over 14v so nothing wrong with the alternator. Battery has been holding its charge over the weekend (longest break between driving has only been 18 hours though) so it doesn't seem to be a battery issue.
My only guess is that one of the electronic devices in the car didn't turn off like it was meant to (no lights left on in the car). Since the recharge all seems to be ok again...... stupid intermittent problems.

Rob, I was reading the updates to this thread and thought I must provide an update on my battery issue and the last post is a query on my issue..... good timing. I have had no issues since last week. I tested the battery yesterday after the car had been sitting for 36 hours and the battery has 12.28v in it. 28 hours later (about half an hour ago) the voltage was 12.27v so it seems to be holding the charge ok. I noticed on Wednesday that when I shut the rear hatch and it only half locked, the mdf display did not turn it self off, so maybe i didn't close the hatch properly last week and this was enough to drain the battery (though i would have thought that the car would have been set up to switch the electonics off after a while to prevent battery drain).
At this stage I am putting it down to operator error rather than a failure on the part of my much beloved R. If it happens again I will get a load test done on the battery.
