An intercooler will certainly help cool things down in the summer, however it's mainly to prevent heatsoak (lack of performance) rather than an engine blowing due to a Stage 1 tune.

I think this is a good point to be aware of, what is the real risk in performing the Stage 1 or 2 mods to the longevity of the car.
On my old MK V GTI i had stage 2 and loved it, no problems to speak of at all, but got rid of it in 5 years.
With the R when I get it (in the next week :) ), was thinking about keeping this car for longer,
so would love to know what the real risk is for this potential piston burn at higher temps due to stage 1/2 modifications?
I guess there's about the same risk that Audi are taking on the TT-S which hasn't been "detuned due to heat" in Australia.
So what have Audi changed in the TT-S to get over this "heat" issue?
Apparently nothing according to the responses every time this question has been asked....
That makes a lot more sense. This nonsense about the 'higher temprature' being the reason is a load of BS. You will not "burn" the top of a piston because the sun was out, this will be caused from a lean spot in the air/fuel ratio in higher rpm which you will find that the Stage 1 tunes elliminate dangerous lean spots..... if they do exist from the factory tune that is.
