An ECU reflash would typically give you an extra 500rpm or so to play with. this would give you more power AND 100k in second gear

I don't believe that this is correct. I don't even think that the Stage 3 cars have a raised RPM. Which is why the manual Stage 3 cars still had that large deficit to the DSG cars that Guy_H has discussed.

Once apon a time, sabloke had a Golf R on order. But he couldn't wait, so he cancelled it and bought a Clio RS 200 Cup Trophee. So he HAS to put the Golf R and its owners down - because he's been looking (but not posting) in all the other Golf R threads, and seeing all the fantastic reviews, and awesome tuning results, and 0 to 100 in 4.68 with an ECU tune only etc, and he's using this thread to try and convince himself he's made the right choice!

Is this the same bloke that called it an "over priced corolla" ?

Have to feel sorry for him for buying a Clio though, he may be very regretful for taking this path!

I'm glad I didn't wait. In fact, by the looks of it, I might have been still waiting today if not biting the bullet getting the Clio. I'm sure this is the right car for me right now, so no regrets there, none.
I got to test drive the Clio because of the fantastic reviews to be found all over the net and in all car magazines. I'm yet to find a really bad one, with complaints other than it being too small, overpriced, too firm or too hardcore. It seems that some senior reviewers and my wife agree on that, ha ha! Don't really care what anyone has to say though and you shouldn't feel obliged to defend the R by blaming the testers or people that don't agree with you, either. I was only trying to point out that MOTOR is not alone in their assessment when they called it boring to drive when compared to the creme of hot hatches.

Not trying to put anyone down, is some of you R guys putting the car down, no me! All this talk about DSG, gear change, power, power, APR, power and tenths to 100 km/h, what's all this about? E-penis. So don't blame me for it because I still like the R regardless of what I'm driving today and that's exactly why I keep reading the R threads. The R is a fine Euro, one of the finest in fact, so stop talking about it like it is a bloody V8 that needs remaps to make it a proper car.

+1. I have a subscription to motor, cause I like hearing what is coming to our shores, updates etc.. But don't for a second think that just cause it's in print, its gospel.

    Not for a second.

The amount of articles I have read in both magazines and online, where quoted figures, model specific data etc has just been wrong is.. to say the least.

I remember reading about how great the 6 speed is in the AUS Spec EVO XIII and the reviewer was adamant that he'd driven the car. More .

That's why so many people on here have a valid and healthy opinion, cause they bought, modified, researched and owned most of the cars and mods they are talking about. Nothing compares to first hand experience you get through ownership over a decent period of time, especially when it's an enthusiast.

Lastly I know a guy who writes for 4WD monthly.. He has a good way with words (since he did a law degree) but he's no car expert. I think he owned one crappy old AWD once.. Ages ago?

That's not to say there isn't ANY good drivers/authors. I saw one guy on CARADVICE who wrote an excellent article. They can be found, but some just do it on the side as a side hobby.
