Unhappy Golf R Front Strut Tower Issues

I'm not sure if this is an R model specific issue or it will be a concern across the entire Mk6 range. There are two mods I've been hamstrung with. The first is a front Strut Brace ( Wiechers Sport PN 512036) that I am in the middle of fitting and the second is camber plates.

In fitting this strut brace (to add to the Unibrace XB and UB and Whiteline components I already have fitted) I was prepared to make minor cuts on either side of the engine bay to allow the brace to fit. However, I've now been stymied by two accelerometers that are positioned on the strut towers. The brace mounting plates will interfere with them and given the ABS and ESC are dependant on them they are the last thing I want to mess with.

Pause - Duck down to take a few photos.

Here is the messy engine bay showing the eventual strut position

Here is the RH Tower (LH looking at it) showing the Brace Mount and the Accelerometer hanging free. You can see the accelerometer and mount are going to interfere. I could trim something off the mount but as it is alloy I can imagine it will eventually stress and crack.

Here is the LH Tower (RH looking at it) showing the mount and the accelerometer properly mounted. Again, there is going to be interference.

I'm guess ing that without major mods to the Strut Brace I won't be fitting it today. This is how I want it to eventually look.

Any advice from anyone who has fitted a front strut brace to a GTI or an R would be greatly appreciated

I wont go further on the second issue other than to say that if you are considering camber plates, this may also be a problem.

IIRC Sammy has camber plates, not sure about the strut brace, in his Mk6 GTI. I might PM him about the issue.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

    Hi Andrew,

I've tried both KW and K-Mac camber plates. Both offered less than desirable camber and horrendous NVH.

I modified my existing strut tops by re drilling and tapping the three bolts that mount the factory hats so they are now further inboard. I also believe you can get more camber by getting Audi TT-RS control arms and ball joints.

Solved. PN 512036 is for non GTI/R cars. PN 517036 is for GTI/R versions.

Off to the for sale forum to sell a Wiechers Aluminium Front Strut for a Mk6 Golf!!!!
