There is no way an RS3 would be anywhere near that cheap.
The way I figure is that there is a $34k premium on the TT-RS vs TT-S.
So even if there was just a $29k premium on the RS3 vs the S3 it would be $100k RRP. But the time you add taxes and onroads that would be just under $126k in NSW, plus options. But even if we halved the premium between the RS3 and S3, the car would still be $85k plus onroads bring it up to $102k plus options.

Of course you could negotiate, but still, it will have an uphill battle for general acceptance at these prices.

Im not so sure. People spend over 100k on an Audi TT. Why wouldnt they spend that much on an RS3? Some people will be more interested in the practical side of things moreso than the styling.

I dont understand why people consider the size of a car to be a contributing factor in the price of it? There are cheap big cars and expensive small cars. They all have their own market

It would be worth them doing it just for bragging rights. It would rule the hot hatch market for sure

I'm actually with Tim. I've it were my cash to spend, I would get an RS3 over a TT-RS any day. However, it's like the issue when the Golf GTI MKV was released on Australia as only a 5 door. Or the BMW 1 series hatch only being available in Australia as a 5 door. Australia car company managers do not think that the is a market for these '3 door sporty hatches'. Or Lexus refusing to bring in the IS350. Or Holden not bringing in the Camaro. Thankfully VW Australia got sick of requests for the 3 door GTI and started bringing that in a few years after the launch of the GTI (I think it was in line with the R32 release). Australia's market is just too small for the car companies to be bothered some times :(

What pissed me off about the Australian market is how luxury cars are taxed so excessively, but then there is still an options list a bloody mile long which will never hold much if any value in the long run. Ultimately, people get massively screwed over on resale and severely upside down. Now I know I have just chosen an MKVI GTI with a crap load of options (not crying victim yet lol), but it's a scary thought to think what it'll actually be worth in 3-4 years time. That's why I am going to throw as much cash down upfront as I can - it'll hurt less now I suspect.

I've just looked on Carsales earlier today to see what a basically stock 2006/7 GTI with maybe leather and roof goes for and its $30k approximately. What will my $11,870 in options be worth in 3 years?... jack **** I expect.

Yeah, I think that the Luxury Car Tax is a scam. As far as I'm aware no other form of 'luxury' in this country is discriminated against like cars are. It's not like you have a luxury tax on homes, or TVs or AV equipment, or holidays etc etc. Just cars. meh

I cant imagine what the second hand market is like in the USA though. The ability to buy brand new awesome cars for relatively cheap and flip them so easily - I see it all the time on various forums. They must be worth absolutely nothing second hand but at least your not going to be so upside down on the finance. Here, you get taken so harshly upfront and then the second hand market is worth nothing also so your left with a significant margin/shortfall in the middle to make up usually because of LCT and bull**** DD/ORC.

Yeah, I've often thought that. If not there should be more 'packages'. Like imagine a 'GTI Luxury Package' which added Bi-Xenon's, Sunroof, Tinted Windows, Leather, MDI and RNS-510 w/ Dynaudio for say $7k instead of the $11,670 of each individually. If that model were specified separately like the Mini Cooper S Chili etc, then it'd also help protect your investment on resale.

Well they do that with car's like the Mazda 3.. SP23 and MPS. Guess what? They sell like ****ing hot cakes and most people option them up. Why?... cause it makes sense - its value for money. Its a well priced package that add's true value. When people look on the second hand lot for an SP23, they see the luxury model and the standard model for similar money. Which do they choose? The GTI will be the same. They will choose the one with more options for not much more but the only difference is the original new buyer of the vehicle got raped on the options and subsequently resale.

I am sure there are many people who will argue that they would like one option and not the other (hence no bundling) but I just think overall its a smarter and fairer way of doing things.

The lux pack on the MPS3 is cheap though and all it really amounts to is Xenons and a rather average bose stereo.

The lux pack for the WRX is much better (the best value I have seen). Leather trim and a sunroof for $2500 if remember correctly.

Maybe VW needs to market a luxury pack (special edition) of leather, sunroof and dynaudio for around $5500. Or a sports pack of 18 inch wheels, ACC and xenons for $4000. The current plethora of options leads to the lengthly order/delivery times we have at the moment.
