Welcome to the forums Xrayshaggy. I merged your thread with this thread since the R isn't out yet... when it is out there'll be a new one where we'll put all the R thread at that stage.

Anyways, to respond to your post....
Bluetooth - you won't need to bother thinking about "which" bluetooth to get. Since you'd have to order in this car from the factory, it will DEFINITELY be a MY11 car. From MY11 there is a new bluetooth being offered which basically renders all the other options obselete. Better yet, it'll cost less than $600 from what I've been told. More information will be available around the R release date I'm sure.

Paint Protection - if you're serious about this, there is only 1 option. 3M Paint Protection Film / Ventureshield Stoneguard (it's the same stuff). Basically a mylar film which gets wrapped onto your car similar to the way contact wraps a book. Practically invisible, but strong enough to protect the paint even in the case of you running into another car or a concrete wall! Sure, you'll need some panel beating, but your paint will probably survive!

Number Plates. The R definitely does come with that stupid numberplate holder. Looking at it in person again yesterday, it's even worse than I thought. Not only does it fit almost no Australian numberplates, but it is VERY curved, meaning the plates need to be BENT to fit it, and you can't use any plate cover! If you did use a plate cover, then the number plates wouldn't be up against the holder properly! It's frickin' terrible. We should probably start a compaign to get it removed! God knows why they started putting them on the cars at the end of the MKV run....

Do tell..... a quick search couldn't find anything about this. Will it be available retro-fit?

Being a European vehicle, it is a perfect fit for not only their (Europe's) style of number plates, but also the Euro plates available to us in Australia.

Yes and no. In NSW it fits 1 style of European plates, and does not fit the other 5 types of European plates. Some other states are in a similar situation. In addition, the plates still need to be bent to match the curve of the holder. I don't understand why this holder exists on the GTI and R, and not the Comfortline and Trendline cars - but either way, it severly limits your choice of number plates.

But considering VW feel it necessary to detune the Australian engine they obviously can customise cars to suit their destinations. Thus removing ill fitting number plate holders I would have thought would not be such a problem.

This is very true, and those are my thoughts. I guess the main issue would be getting the attention of the right person from Volkswagen Group Australia, and pleading the case in the right way. I guess it could also help to know what the general feeling amoung the VW buying population is (gathering from these forums, the plate holder is very unpopular) and whether there is any specific reason that the decision was made to include it.

They are kicking around Sydney! I saw a blue 3 door Golf R stuck in traffic heading east on cleveland street about 2 weeks ago. Didn't look like the nicest place to be testing that car!

    Cool

Be careful... I traded my MY03 WRX, for a MY08.. what a crap car that was! then to top it off, they released an MY09 that smashed the car performance wise which is really why I bought a WRX. gave it some leather and sunroof and I was sorted. Now they are releasing the 2011 WRX that has the STi body type. **** Subaru. From a supporter since my first (MY99).. I have given up and feel no more loyalty to the brand. The resale values on the newer cars get slaughtered with every new model that replaces the previous one, its ridiculous.

SO i ordered a GOLF GTi. Luckily for me they are one hell of a well made car! Cant wait.
