If they are going to be handing out press cars soon, then RRP will be right around the corner as they will have to tell the reviewer's the details for publication.

That's very important to me. I am happy to sit on the GTI for a few more weeks (it arrives 5th and del is 20th May).

Hopefully more info (inc RRP) is announced in that time and I can bust the dealers balls to make good on an R deal and sell my loaded GTI with no wait time.
Yeah no point cancelling the GTI yet as you'd have to go back to the start of the queue if you found out there were no discounts or that you didn't like it after a test drive (but glad someone cancelled mine as i only had to wait 1 week LOL).

The AWD looked to allow a quicker launch, but can't really argue with the reduced weight of the Scirocco R. Hope they make it out here one day!!

Further to my last post. I was told that if pricing is still not out when my car arrives, they will hold it for a further month to let me decide. Basically I just wouldn't take delivery yet and it'd still be mine to take if the pricing/deal doesn't cut it. Playing it safe. I know what I prefer though.

Yes I got the same info yesterday also. In the end my GTI order wasnt cancelled. Nothing to lose by taking the wait and see approach now. Must seriously be pissing the dealers off not having pricing. Stupid to release spec without price. If they know the spec, they know the price, atleast within $1K.

For those sitting on the Golf R –v- GTI fence:

Referring to the drag race between the Sirocco R –v- Golf R. AFAIK the Japanese Golf R receives the full monty of 199kW/350Nm. The Australian version Golf R is stated to be slower again to the tune of 0.2 sec or so over the same distance. The Sirocco is stated by the factory to be 0.3 sec slower in this run, but is clearly the swifter vehicle in this timed run to the tune of 0.2 secs, which indicates that the times quoted for the Golf R may be embellished to a degree - may be as much as 0.5 secs on the upside. These times also give credence to what the Euro/UK magazines are echoing when comparing the Golf R to the Renault Megane Sport Cup Chassis and Ford Focus RS. The times for the Golf R are consistent with the times laid by its cousin, the Audi S3 – 14 sec dead for the quarter mile.

The drag race is factual data that supports my decision to stick with the Golf GTI atm. Many acceleration times reported for the GTI vary between 6.3 sec to 6.9 sec (factory claim) with an average being around 6.6 sec (DSG GTI) - the quarter mile run 14.5 – 14.9 secs for the GTI DSG. In other words, the real world difference between the Golf R and GTI is not that palpable, as with the case of the Sirocco in the video timed drag race. We haven’t gotten to the cornering bit yet, where the lighter GTI with XDS may further bridge this gap to the Golf R – or fuel use for that matter.

YouTube - Golf R im Sauerland

On another note: A video of a German going a bit hard in the German country-side. Golf R sounds a bit deeper & throaty than the Mark 6 GTI.

    Cheers

I'm not sure a single video, where CLEARLY the reaction time of the person in the Scirocco was far superior thahn the person in the Golf R, is anything to judge it by. The Golf R's wheels didn't even start rotating until the Scirocco had already launched!

Depends if AWD is worth the extra weight and extra drive train losses. The Scirocco R should be faster most times, maybe not from a standstill but would be pretty close.

Agree! That was probably the worst Golf R youtube vid ive ever seen and a complete waste of time. If you are going to time two cars, at least have them launch at the same time.

There is no doubt the Roc will be quick on the move, just as my MPS3 is, infact the 3 will spank just about anything on the role, but the R will out-launch any 2WD car if driven by someone with half a clue.

A bunch of Japanese guys with their full race suits & helmets rolling up to a an airport style runway complete with timing gear, video camera and a bunch of sports cars would suggest to me that perhaps more than one quarter mile run ensued. I’ll go out on a limb and say that the times shown in the video are either (1) The average time from a number of test runs of each vehicle; or, (2) The fastest times clocked by each vehicle.

Well - we can't tell cause we're not Japanese. All we can see is someone that obviously don't know how to launch in a drag race, and the time in which the R is slower is obviously less than the delay in the dude starting! So...
