Yes so assume $2-3k lower due to the leather, and a small discount and it might come under $70k. That's what I am thinking.

Even then its expensive at $70k but it's a great car. Still only be financing $60k max so i'd need to dump in $10k that I hadnt planned for.

So sad - just had this snazzy new sig made and all

I'm sorry, but the moment you're spending $60K+ on a Golf, which is the most common of all the VWs on sale in the world today, even a special Golf like the R, you're just wasting money .....

I'd rather be spending my money on something else more exclusive ....

Good value at that price but I'm addicted to new car smell. Guess I'm a sucker for depreciation, never was good at accounting lol.

I will agree with the 60k+ on a Golf being silly but only a few posts back you said you were thinking of spending the same money on an S3. If an S3 is more exclusive than an R32/R then I must be living in a different reality to you?

IMO S3 (any Audi) is far more exclusive than a VW .... even the Rs ....

I do realise that come resale time that does not seem to be reflected in the price you get but still while you have it, it has more "snob" value. Not that I care really, not ever having owned an Audi before .... (prefer BMWs to both, but believe in value for money as well)

Anything over $70k and its 135 territory which I am sure has been mentioned numerous times in this thread.

I've got a feeling the GTI will be my car - and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Even if it is optioned to the hilt and will depreciate hard.

elisiX, I think that your exercise with the dealer is not only pointless, but also detrimental to your ability to bargain. The dealer pretty much considers you a captive audience right now, so of course there is not going to be any discount. Once the car is available, it'll be a different story, just like it was with the GTI - although you'll probably need to go to another dealer now that you've spent so much time talking about the R!

I think that all the comments from everyone in this thread about "once you get to '$xx,xxx' that buying a Golf is silly" are silly
I mean, if I want to purchase a Golf R with a certain specification, and if it cost $75k, then getting that in an Audi S3 is going to cost even more. Based on R32 otr prices (including discount) that would be about $10k or more at this point, although that may be more or less depending on the base price. Depending on particular options, this can HEAVY push up the S3 price ($5,500 sat nav vs ~$3300 sat nav) etc. Now I know that you can get HUGE discounts on Audi S3. This is because they're so over priced to start with that Audi has plenty of room to move. But the thing is, it is more expensive no matter which way you look at it, so paying more for the same thing or less, well, that's up to you

Specifically, saying anything $70k+ is BMW territory is a very silly comment. Cheapest 135i is $72,800. Even without options, on the road that is $85,650 (in NSW, more in VIC, slightly less in QLD). Again, by the time it is optioned to match the features of a $75k R32, then the 135i is comfortably over $90k on the road. And yes, you could bargain with both of them, but it doesn't change the fact that the 135i and the S3 will always be more expensive than the R. Just like the R will be more expensive than a GTI with the same options...

Corey this could be argued back and forth over and over but I cant be bothered. lol

Basically my point is that an R over $70k is moving into territory which for me, would constitute looking at alternatives such as a 135i - most likely second hand. There's one trade off - old v new. I think almost every point that is made for this argument will have a similar outcome - that of a trade off. I still really want an R - but I made it very clear that I wont be buying one without a discount. I didn't mention the $70k figure to them at all. Only that I expect a discount if I am to move. It's going to benefit them if I do move because they will have a highly sought after optioned GTI for immediate delivery. Perhaps even able to sell it for more than what I negotiated. I would hope that might help reinforce a discount on the R to balance things out.

At the end of the day, who knows. I'm just playing it by ear for now but I think spending over $70k on the R is crazy. But no more crazy than me spending $57k on a GTI

elisix call Mark Tefler at avc (Aust Vehicle Consultants) if he can't get you a discount no one can. If it works you owe me a good deal on a panerai heheh. Their fee was about $400 from memory not sure if it has gone up. Guess it depends whether another dealer is prepared to take you GTI and do a good deal on an R. Nothing to lose.

I'm with Coreying here, the comparisons being made are pointless. Gotta compare apples with apples. If you're going to entertain the thought of a used S3 or 135i, then you need to compare it to a used fully loaded R32 which will be cheaper than a new R by a large margin.

Discounts on the R will be there from day 1, even on pre-orders. It could be seen as a captive market but if you stick to your guns, you always win. I'd hope there is nobody silly enough to pay over $70k for R's even if they were fully loaded. Personally, I'll be going for sub $60k, it isn't worth more regardless of how good I know it will be!

Pretty sure I've tried AVC before when looking for GTI prices and they weren't any better than the deals people are getting on this forum. I'd have to dig up the quote later.
