But I'd only consider the ECU remap at best.
There's not much 'guinea pigging' to occur. We've already had the S3 drivers do that for us for the past 4 years

It will cost you between 2 - 4k from memory.

APR is used as they have the most support, their products go through a a hell of a lot of testing and the results can be seen in the S3's they have done.
It may not give the best power figures (close enough though) but the parts are more likely to last and perform better throughout their lifetime.

Just saw the new Club Spec'd Imprezza being released in australia for 50k so that would be the price to beat for the Golf R imho.

Sorry, just to clarify, it'll DEFINITELY cost you more than $2k, and while, you could do it for just over $4k, there is no set 'definition' for what stage II is (unlike Stage I).

Stage II for the Audi S3 / Audi TT-S / Golf R is:-
    Required Software/Hardware:
APR ECU Upgrade $1695 for a single program. $1850 with two programs. ($250 for another program, $500 for two more programs, $170 for fault code erase, $170 for security lockout, $420 for anti theft). I personally would get the $1850 two program + $170 security lockout option.
http://www.goapr.com.au/products/apr...-downpipe.html $2495 for the S3 (but only $1,525 for the MK6 GTI, so hopefully for the R it will be somewhere between these two prices).

    Recommended Hardware:
APR/Carbonio Intake is $599 for Stage I or $948 for Stage II. I believe this is what will be used in the R
APR 3" RSC Full Exhaust $3995 for the S3. Of note, the S3's exhaust isn't an RSC model (no drone), but the MK6 Golf GTI's exhaust is an RSC model and is only $3100. So again, hopefully the Golf R will be somewhere between these two prices and will be an RSC exhaust too. Also, obviously, if you do a full exhaust from the get go, it's cheaper than getting the downpipe first and adding the rest later.
APR Intercooler is $1995, and this is what will be used for the R.

So as you can see. The cheapest you can do Stage II, based on the S3 hardware, is $4190 - although with two ECU programs and the security lockout, $4515
If you add in the full range of recommended hardware, the cost is $8958
Both of these have a labour component which is additional.

How much will you achieve? 240KW / 435NM is the APR Stage I ECU update. Stage II isn't necessarily a big upgrade from that, but what it does is make the power more consistent and available from wider revs. The intercooler means that the power is there for longer and on hotter days etc. There is no specific numbers as what the Stage II makes because there are numerous configurations of what is 'Stage II'.

I personally don't think that the Imprezza is really any competition for the R. From performance sure. But from build quality and interior quality, no.

I agree with the build quality and interior being sub-par for the imprezza but if people are looking for a small performance car and aren't ane still tossing up between car's, this could prove to be a coompetitor.

Sure we would go the R as we are VW fans but if you are coming from a 10yo riceline, then anything new is going to be built better and have a better interior.

Thanks for making this all nice and clear Corey.

I think for me, Stage I on the Golf R or even GTI is completely sufficient for street use.

For $1500-1750 on the GTI depending on programs chosen etc, you cant go wrong.

The other $2k+ for the Stage II updgrade ontop can be better spent on suspension IMO.

This is assuming street usage only. Even rare track usage would make great benefit of the Stage II however.

    APR Stg 1 = 239kw/435NM
    APR Stg 2 = ~255kw/450NM (Stg 1 + Carbonio + Exhaust) Cost about $6-7K

Intercooler upgrade not needed for Stg2 .... also Golf R (and S3) intercooler is 30% bigger than GTI to start with anyway. S3 (And Golf R) intercooler is popular and cheapish upgrade to GTIs, TSI Jettas and TSI Tiguans.

Stg 2 as detailed here for me is a given ...... ......

I'm leaning towards the Stage II as well.
In my MKV GTI, despite what the difference in peak power figures might say, the Stage II upgrade did make a big difference in the feel and the sound of the car. It wasn't just that the exhaust note was deeper, raspier and a bit louder (I had the APR quad tip 3" exhaust), but the engine note, induction sound etc also changed significantly. It really was an awesome change which had many people asking whether I had made "significant engine modifications".

Thanks for pointing out that info about the S3/R intercooler being 30% larger. Although APR list their intercooler as a "recommended upgrade", I guess they are there to make money, so that's no big surprise.

What are your thoughts on the differences between the Carbonio Stage I and Stage II intakes? Is the Stage II worth the $349 difference in price?
