3 or 5 meh.. Is it really a big enough reason not to get a Golf R? Otherwise just stick to GTI or S3

Re: Golf R arrives in July?

By the time the bloody things turn up you'd be better waiting and ordering an MY11.

It really is a big enough reason for me. It has nothing to do with how many doors the car has. I'm sure we already went through all this several pages ago in this thread.

Being the shape it is, I personally believe the 3 door gives it just the right profile and lines to look like a sporting coupe.

A 5 door golf really just looks way to bland for me.

See the pics posted earlier and see how well the EVO X can carry 4 doors without looking like your grandparents car.

....and yes, there are people in Australia (all 3 of us lol) that would by a different make if the one we wanted wasn't available in the configuration we like.

I guess I just really don't see any possible reason why VWA wouldn't offer both models? Especially as most of the orders are sold as custom builds from Germany and have to be built on the same bloody production line as all the other RHD cars!

    Agree 100%.

What is funny is people placing pre-orders for unknown quantities & for an unknown price. Could all be a waste of time and waiting if they never bring a 3dr etc.

That is a good reason but above all. I want a 3 door. Simple as that. If I'm spending that much money, it will be on what I want.

I haven't had a response from my e-mail last tuesday (automated or otherwise) to the guy that posted the comments about 5 doors. But did get a random call from a rep at my dealer (Not the sales guy I signed up with) who was offering a follow up call for any questions I might have. He gathered quickly that I knew as much as he could tell me already and suggested signup to John Mellor's GoAuto newsletter (already have) which they often got info from before VWA told them LOL.

I did some thinking over the weekend and it has my brain working overtime. I want a 3dr mk6 and need it by end of June. The R is not likely to meet either requirement now. So thinking of going back on my words and trying to get a 3dr GTI instead then spend the difference on a good O/S holiday. Give it another 12-18 months to see what other cars come out and trade up from there. After an R, the GTI is still the best option I can see under $75k. Either good cars or my taste have got more expensive, not sure which

Yeah - I agree that after the R, the GTI is the best option under $75k (where you then get 135i's etc). But don't wait too long to get the GTI, as I've been 'informed' that VW Australia are also considering removing the 3dr option from the GTI as well.

I don't know .... if you want 3 door and good performance for around $50K I'd buy a BMW 125i Coupe above the GTI .....

Its quicker and more exclusive (than a stock GTI) ... got the 3 doors as well

Since its got the 330i engine (just detuned), can also be chipped up to over 190kw if the need strikes you ....

Haven't head that one but if that turned out true then I'll take it clearly that VWA has no interest in anyone that isn't a "family man".

I cannot fault the engine, overall engineering or fact that it is RWD which is #1 for me. Without question the 125 would be a great drivers car. I just can't get past the body style of the 1 series coupes. It doesn't do it for me at all. Otherwise I'd probably have bought a 135i already. The performance of those things is just sensational.

I agree Dave- the GTI would be just as good 90% of the time and you could just upgrade down the track when you at least know what's coming and the price, and after the initial hype has died down. Doesn't sound like there would be any discounts either if you pre order the R.
