Well for me, no 3 door = very little chance of me wanting it. The only thing that will sway me over is the price. If they can get it under a fully (almost fully) optioned up 3 door GTI, then it maybe something worth while.

    But:
    - No 3 door
    - No standard leather
    - less power (only gaining 4KW over the R32)

so I hope they do 1 of 2 things.

    1. Bring the Scirocco R in to replace the 3 door Golf R
    2. Reduce the cost of the Golf R to the high 40's/ low 50k.

I also hope that VW have their heads screwed on properly and know that they can't be asking premium prices for the Golf R when they are removing kit and options.

It needs to come in under the luxuary car tax threshold, and having a reduced import tarrif of 5% should also help.

Deep down though... I want the Scirocco R.

I've emailed Karl - so we'll see if he responds at all. I urge everyone else that wants a 3 door to email him too though.
I'm personally not fussed over the Scirocco R - it's not too my requirements, and it's not AWD, so for me I'd just get a 3dr GTI... but more likely I just wouldn't get another VW....

Well I would urge anyone who wants the 3 Door Golf R and/or the Scircco R to contact him.

I am getting abit sick of the excuses for not importing the Scirocco here. If VW NZ can have it, so can we.

They have made the perfect chance to import it now by excluding the 3 Door Golf R from the line up. So they should just go ahead and do it.

Want a Sirocco R - Buy a 3 door GTI, add coilovers & aftermarket ECU re-tune and you have a Sirocco type vehicle.

Top Gear Australia's Steve Corby was in Austria for the release of the R. He had the R for drives in Germany and Czech Republic. He had the Golf R on the autobahn, where it is designed to excel in this environment. Averaged 180kph for half hour and 160kph for 2 hour drive. States R likes a drink at those speeds, nowhere near the 8.5l/100km claim figure. He'd still take the long-term GTI Top Gear Aus has on hand atm.

July/August 2010 is a long wait for all involved. I think I'll keep my Mark 6 GTI for 4 years and look at the Mark 7 Golf R. AWD not as great a necessity for a GTI with std ECU tune. By MK7 R time, Volkswagen should be using some more exotic materials to save more weight and improve economy, not to mention the EA888 motor will be tuned accordingly.

    Cheers

Agree with all the comments, sounds like the Golf R won't be a premium vechicle like the R32 at least in terms of standard equipment (ie Leather/Bi-xenons), so lets hope they don't charge premium prices. In reality it's only a bit better than a GTI and in NZ i think AWD was a 3k option or something.

Look like a lot of people could be looking elsewhere if there is no 3 R or Scirocco R. WJ agree that a modded GTI would be just as fun underneath but it's the style and unique looks of the Rocco that is what most people like about it.

I still think a GTI witout too many options is the best value.

Well that's a bit of a silly comment. NO CAR gets their 'claimed economy figures' when driven at 180 and 160kph! lmao

^Agree totally. I suprised that the journo mentioned this, but to clarify my writing, he mentioned the fuel consumption and the higher speeds in different parts of his article, also suggesting that fuel consumption at more moderate speeds when it was icey/snowy, was not as good as expected. In any event, fuel economy shouldn't be overly overly excessive either. I think the journos point was that perhaps the GTI/Sirocco or similar, driven in a similar manner, may fair better in terms of fuel consumption, due to less heat to contend with and lighter weight.

That's what i assumed.. You can be doing high speeds without gunning it as such, but the revs will be higher than doing lower speeds so of course it will use more. The R32 fuel never gets it's claimed consumption figures .

^Exactly. Very unlikely to replicate the official consumption levels in real world conditions. But trying to obtain a gauge on how much the R is likely to use over and above offical claims. The official claims of 21% less fuel usage of the R verses the R32 seems good on paper, but both driven in a similar way or same roads, I'd imagine the claimed saving of the Golf R would be much less so. Point earlier in this thread, to keep the turbo cool, the air coming in and out of the motor has to be kept cooler, with either cooler air intake temp or more fuel or combination of both. No fuel consumption figures were stated in the Top Gear article.

    Cheers.
