+1 to the Sharkie. Hit the nail on the head.

The APR Stage I ECU for the Golf R is already available, as the identical engine/turbo/intercooler etc is already being used in the S3 and TT-S. The update gives you 240kw and 435NM..

You can read details of it on APR Australia's site

    240kw AWD = Yes please

Sharkie is right, there's no doubt the Golf R will be better, just depends what people want to spend but also agree it would be better to get one than chosing a heap of options on the GTI as it will be pretty close to the price.

Still need to wait to see if leather/bi-xenons are standard and the LCT is something else to consider. I have a RNS510 already i am considering taking over to the next car, (but you can always fit them later through places like Harding Performance to save on some LCT).

Ps what options did you go for Sharkie?

Options ??? ... now theres a good way to p1$$ money out against a tree .... spend $10K on options get $1k extra come trade/sale time .....

I'm expecting the R to come with leather, Xenons, parking sensors and metallic paint as standard so for me there is only the RNS510, bluetooth and depending on whether I can live with the R's DSG maybe that.

Almost a year ago now I asked for a 5dr manual in silver ....

Mate I don't think leather will be standard, as numerous reviews have mentioned this will be an option, and I dont think you will get parking sensors either - So you can add $4,000 for those 2 right there.

Id say the base price will be $54,990 by the time you add leather, 19's, sensors etc it will be a $63,000 car everyday of the week.... So you than ask your self is that $16000 better than the GTI???

Every review out there is non-Aus spec so they don't apply ..... VWA has a precedent in that the Rs all (R32, R36 & R50) have leather, metallic paint and goodies such as parking sensors (not park-assist) as standard .... so yes, from my discussions with VW these will all be there ....

And this is the top of the range Golf .... and that engine and AWD is something I'd pay $35K extra for, scrabbling over a few thousand $ just shows that there is little understanding or appreciation for the AWD R and its position at the top of the list .... ....

I have to agree with Sharkie. VW Australia are very aware of the expectations of the Australian buying public. I doubt that VW would be silly enough to release the Golf R here without leather as standard, or if they did, they'd at least drop the initial price of the car enough that the leather option still only bought the car up to the same price as the R32.

    Have some faith peoples

Would be awesome if those options mentioned are standard - however I think the average punter would look at the 2 vehicles and see one optioned for $46,000 and the other for $58,000+ with limited options.. When you think a MK6 GTI with a quick ECU reflash can acheive 180KW, this is ample power for the average punter

But I think you're missing the point. The Golf R isn't FOR the average punter. That's what the GTI is for

It's like saying the average executive wouldn't buy a Ferrari over a BMW M5... it's obvious, the Ferrari is meant for only the most successful of executives! hehe

Its about value for money at the end of the day - and for me I have yet to see the $16,500 value in the R, but I obviously have not driven one as yet..

Look at the end of the day, I have told my dealer to call me as soon as the R details are confirmed because I am intereated - but Im just thinking the price looks a little steep at this stage

Buying a GTI for $40K is great value for money ....

Adding $20K in options are incredibly poor value for money ....
