You can retrofit most of those options later when the budget allows, but agree tough choice.

I suppose with the R you can option on things which you can't retro fit:
park assist
adaptive chassis control
dynaudio
iPod connectivity
sunroof

I would definitly want the 19" rims asking as they were a factory option with a reasonable price, like the detroits are with the GTI.

And I really do not care for leather. But I seen some pics of these leather bucket seats in the R that look pretty awesome.

Damn it! Looks like the GTI will be more appealing to get the options I want and not having to pay luxury car tax

when does the tax kick in? And how is it charged?
From memory isn't it like 33% for every $1000 above a certain threshold?

But does that only get charged for the car and options? Or the total drive away price?

For the MK5 there was a definite distinction between the GTI and R32. They were different cars in all respects, only really sharing the Golf base as their technology and intended markets were different. The R32 was both superior and inferior in some respects to the GTI.

The MK6 is different. The R now essentially is a "Super" GTI. It has relegated the GTI to a middle of the range Golf, just like the others.

So people really need to stop trying to justify either. If you want the top of the range Golf, buy the R, if you cannot afford it or try to justify it any other way, you may just as well buy a 118TSI and add lots of options to it...

This is a thread (like some others) related to the R and not to people unable to make up their minds.

If you are a true enthusiast (and can afford the R) there is no question which 1 you must buy as the GTI is inferior to the R in all respects.

If you want a luxury sporty hatch and could not care less about its inferior performance then buy the GTI ... and let the fence-sitting be .... please ....

Pauly, having AWD and the extra power (limited or not) from the factory on the R vs Park Assist and a few other jovial options in a GTI is for me, the better choice.

Nav can be fitted later (which would be my plan if I take an R without it), but Sunroof, Xenon, Leather are musts for me. GTI or R. Hence my choices in my sig.

Like a few people on here, I am undecided which way to go - GTI or the R.

I must say, I dont think the R really blows me away to be honest - IMO doesnt really have a visual WOW factor, does not look like a car that has costed you nearly $60K

However I would be curious to drive one and with a software upgrade I presuming 210kw would not be unrealistic. That would be a weapon

For me, the big thing is going to be options, i.e is leather standard, how much are 19's ( Need those) and will ACC be standard etc. I think if you can negotiate one with leather/sports seats and 19's on the road for around $55K I think that's an attractive option. I think too many people are wasting money on too many options on their MK6 GTI golf

The Luxury Car Tax cuts in at $57,180. All options, dealer delivery and GST is calculated prior to LCT being applied. Every dollar above $57,180 has the 33% tax applied to it. Stamp duty is then charged on top of all of that.

The APR Stage I ECU for the Golf R is already available, as the identical engine/turbo/intercooler etc is already being used in the S3 and TT-S. The update gives you 240kw and 435NM..

Isn't that the point? Compare the Golf GTI with the Lancer Ralliart, the Subaru WRX, the Focus XR5 and the Mazda 3 MPS. Or the Golf R with the higher spec version of those cars. The others have either crazy colours, trolley handles, chintzy dials or speed holes to justify the money you spent on a hatchback. And inform everybody else on the road as well. The Golf is entirely different. It's essentially a luxury hatch with a nice bit of kit under the bonnet.
