Annoying part is, around the same money the choices aren't that great. Anything japanese is going to be fast and fun but they're average places to be when your sitting in the drivers seat. And some just look like 12yo wet dreams...ie Evo X.
    Yeah - that's what's upsetting me.
My MKV GTI was 3 door, and my Polo GTI was 3 door... my car before them was also 3 door (haven't driven a 5 door in a decade or so).
Now I'm also hearing that the new Polo GTI will ONLY be in 5 door as well! I mean wtf Volkswagen, replace a car which has ONLY been 3 door with one that is ONLY available as a 5 door?

Why are VW so happy to be giving away their EXISTING customers?!

yeah ur right... and according to the dealer i spoke to.. the only new R32's available are directly from VW australia.. ie showcase cars (or whatever the actual name for them are)... didnt get to ask the exact manufactured date (which would be nice to know)... and pretty much standard (in terms of options)...

he mentioned july being release date etc.. but by time the Oz gets some delivery, and then they (the actual dealership) get any in stock, other time wasting issues etc etc... it looks more like august.. then there's the issue of availability with the actual spec's you're after for the R20...(eg manual vs DSG, 3dr vs 5dr etc).... apparently he's already received deposits for the R20's..... which i find funny because i asked for an indication on sales price and he couldn't give a clear answer on that....not his fault mind you.. but as a customer.. thats a big step laying down a deposit without knowing the actual cost of the car!... i guess some people just have spare money to spend..

I've emailed Karl and cc'd Anke. Doubt I'll get anything but an automated response though.

It is a hard concept to do initially but it depends on your situation. I hate buying anything without a negotiation, its in the blood but with a pre-order you can't. In my case, I have a lease expiring around June/July so I need a car. If I was to wait for a time when I can negotiate a price I still have to find a car in the meantime which will cost money and not be what I want to be driving. The bonus of being an early adopter might appeal to some but I couldn't care less about that part.

Yeah - I emailed Karl. Got an out of office with his mobile number!
I hope I get an actual reply though. Depending what it is, I might then email Anke to enquire why she is giving away existing VW customers to other brands when she's apparently here to expand the customer base.

Just finished my lease in january and decided to keep the car until say Decemberish, waiting for the R. Don't want to be an early adopter, me. Also, being pressed to buy because you need something to drive is not a good position to be in as a buyer...
I've got plenty of time to look around and to evaluate the R properly. Who knows, maybe Ford will finally decide to bring over the hot hatches bad boy, too

I agree, screw waiting till Aug only to find out the pricing then, and whether there will be a 3dr. All this is hyping it up a lot, may not even be much better than a GTI.

The 135i styling could be better but a second hand one may be a good prospect, not worth buying too many new cars in a row unless you plan to keep them for 5years etc.

Try two months! Seriously! Had a new car for just two months. Lost $10k on that one. But oh well, it was to get the R36 so I didn't care!

It's only money and you can't take it with you...

As for posting pictures of side on between the 5 door and 3 door models, that is nigh on impossible to find the two pictures from the side at the same angle, let alone same car or colour etc. But here is about as close as I could find:

As you can see (apart from slight difference in ride height as they're different models) the main differences between the 3 and 5 door models are:
Length of front door is longer on 3 dr model
Less lines on the 3 dr model due to deletion of rear door, and a single glass panel for rear side windows instead of two.
The rear side window on the 3 dr model is more curved, especially along the bottom where it 'sweeps up' to the where 'elbow' would be in the 5 door's rear edge of the window creating a wider 'shoulder' between the window lower edge and the shoulder line which runs along the entire side.

To me, the only thing which could give any impression of change of stance would be the 3 doors sweeping lower edge on the rear window which would give the 3 door the more 'aggressive looking stance' due to the wider shoulder line...
thanks...just doesnt look right for me
