You'll definitely be happy with the GTI! I had one and loved it. I'm old enough and ugly enough and lucky enough to be paid enough to afford the R and to 'toy with the idea' of driving up to QLD to hand my car over to Guy_H and get the Stage III kit done. The AWD will definitely help in that respect.

Also, my favourite colour is blue, and so I have to get an R

I think you'll be happy with the GTI as well. I think the GTI is the best overall bang for your buck, especially with a quick flash tune.

If you have the extra cash and can comfortably afford the R then go for it as it obviously has the advantage of AWD and will make even more power.

For me, the GTI is going to be awesome, and hopefully I can follow in coreying's foot steps in the coming years and get a Golf R.

With pricing expecting to come in shy or on that of the R32 - my decision is just about confirmed to move to the R from the GTI.

I will of course wait for final pricing (and negotiations at that point) before letting go of my GTI order but its looking good at this point.

My only issue will be significant delays past May as July would be painful.

What are you driving right now elisix if you don't mind me asking?

I only ask this as I sold my 3 MPS 18 months ago and have been driving the wife's Yaris on weekends while saving for our house. So I know the pain you may be in...

Sold my 265HP 06 TT a year back and been driving a Mazda 3 since.

We had bought a new 08 Mazda 3 SP23 about a year before selling the TT though as we decided to keep one car while buying our second property.

The Mazda is a great bit of kit for $32k I must say, but I miss the outright power, luxury and feel the euro's bring.

If I were without a car, then I agree, the longer wait would be painful - but man, you've already got a 'competent car', despite it being a Mazda , so what's another month or so to have exactly what you want ?!

Corey - I basically will wait - but I am going to whinge all the same.

Nothing will be set in stone until pricing is - regardless.

Hehe - well for me, I had a MKV GTI which was literally fully optioned (except for Metallic paint, since it was red) and then had the full Oettinger body kit, oettinger wheels, and APR Stage II setup... for less than 5 months when a bus killed it in Jan 09.
I looked around for another one of similar specs, but couldn't regardless of colour or age. I considered ordering a brand new one, but then VW had just shown the Golf GTI MK6 (including in blue) so by the time my new MKV arrived the MK6 GTI would be out and there was no way I could do that!

But then VW said the 'R32 replacement' would be a 2L turbo, which is what I had always wanted anyway, so purchased the Polo GTI when I _finally_ got my insurance cheque in April 09 and I've been waiting since then for the R
