    OMG! The Polo GTI costs $28k but the Golf 77TSI only costs $25k... VW you suck!

    OMG, the HSV Astra is $45k but you can get a SS Commodore for that.

    Repeat, rinse and lather for every single brand out there.
    REAL Sports models (i.e. not simply those with "sports stickers") cost more. As has always been the case.

    You forget to list what the GTI has over the Passat. IMO, I can't really see somebody cross-shopping an entry level Passat against a GTI. logical cross-shop would be Skoda Superb & Audi A4.

    PS: The passat has a 1.8TSI engine, same as an Octavia, entry level Superb, Audi A4, etc. EA888 block the same as the 2.0GTI.
    I'm not suggesting you cross shop Passat and GTI, I'm just saying GTI might be massively overpriced compare to other VW models...

    The DSG 7 speed is not an improvement over the DSG 6 speed, they are different gearboxes for different applications (low power vs high power), the MDI is standard on the GTI as is bluetooth (an $800 option on the Passat I assume) and the DSG GTI is around $42K driveaway at the moment. Leather and park assist add another $5K.

    GTI has plenty standard that the Passat doesn't

    -Sports suspension
    -Sports seats
    -Sports instrumentation
    -Handling (doesn't have the boat feeling you get from the Passat)
    -More powerful engine, stronger transmission capable of a lot more tuning
    -Performance tyres

    to name but a few of the many changes

    You can get more Falcon for your money then a Passat. Does that make the Falcon better??

    Take a look at the base model Golfs and the extra for the GTI isn't that much when you consider what you get. This would be a better comparison instead of comparing two different models (and one model being a pov pack and the other being one of the sports models). The GTI will have more gross profit in it but probably less net profit when you look at the low volumes and the R&D costs.

    I think VWA already commented that with the higher AUD, they took the opportunity to reprice the PoloGTI when it was first announced. Not sure if the regular Polos were too. I remember reading about it when researching the PoloGTI.

    I expect the new Passat would get the same pricing consideration.

    The Golf VI came out much earlier so I think they still had the old pricing which they never corrected. Might not be a bad thing for current owners who worry about resale, I guess.

    But Mk VII? If the AUD continues to be this high, I expect the price to be revised as well.

    i guess it is compared to a Polo but if you just looked at price/features/value then you'd probably buy a Hyundai i30. Look at the street price of a base Commodore compared to a HSV Clubsport - same thing.

    "well gee, the extra 30kw is nice, and I like the low profile tyres & alloy wheels. The leather steering wheel feels pretty sexy. The dual zone climate control is a lot nicer than the basic style aircon. I lke the 6-stack & MP3 capability. The 6 airbags make me feel a bit safer, as does the stability control. I love the trip computer, electric windows, cruise control & all the extra gadgetsIn fact. I even think it's worth the premium for the badge on the back & the fact i can say my car craps all over your entry level 4 cylinder camry."

    Looking at US VW site can't stop wondering at their prices: their Jetta (from US$16,495) is cheaper than Golf (from US$17,965).
    Plus Australian Jetta is double the price (AUD 29,000)???

    On top of that the only Golf I see is 2.5L, there is no 77TSI or 90TSI (Trims & Specs < VW Golf - 2011 Volkswagen Golf Hatchback < Models < Volkswagen of America).
    How come Australian version is only 1.2L or 1.4?
    Is there any chance VWA will reduce their prices on their cars to somehow match US pricing?

    Guess it's a bit harder to negotiate when you are still out of Australia. I did call around to some of the shops that was recommended by other forum members. Still ended up pricier than what I was quoted here.

    I think that's the main point. The car is already here and if I wanted to custom order, that's another 4-7 months away.

    ps the Edition35 is quoted as being about 4500 bucks more than the regular GTI. Isn't that the same premium as the Adidas? If so, what are the chances that I can get an Edition 35 at the same driveaway prices as the current Adidas now, ie about 45-48k? Maybe I'll go find a decent second hand Golf, drive it around a few months while waiting for the Edition 35? I honestly don't like the seats on the Adidas, but the LED DRL/dynamic cornering xenons and rear LED tail lights are really something I'd like. I am OK with the rims, but that Edition 35 BBS looks beautiful on the Golf, man. I have seen a similar design on the GTR R35 but they just don't quite sync up.

    I think that's something we are trying to work through. Subject to financing or something was what he mentioned.     Sending you a contract using his personal address is also not uncommon, but a little weird from a big dealer. If your in doubt give the dealer main phone number a call and ask to speak with the manager or accounts person, and ask if its legit or not.
    I guess it should be OK then. Thanks for the confirmation guys.. no need to give the CVS number when doing this right? That's only needed for online transactions.

    One simple reasoning: gas is cheap in the US.

    The 1.2/1.4 variants are amazingly economical to run and in countries where fuel is expensive (that includes the UK), they tend to be more popular. Which kinda explains the GTI (both the Golf and even more so for the Polo).

    Who really needs a fuel guzzling 2.5l that doesn't go anywhere near as fast as the 2.0T in your GTI.

    In the US, I rarely found cars that were smaller than 2.0l when I was renting. 3.0l V6s were common. And cheap. Though even with their incredibly cheap fuel, some Yanks are now aware of the words: FUEL ECONOMY.

    You can't compare the USA to Australia for many reasons. Getting into that argument is as pointless as this line of thread, as you can literally write books about why the price differences between Australia and USA exist, and unlike most people think, it's got nothing to do with the value of the Australian dollar.

    But I should point out that the USA Jetta is not the Jetta that exists in Europe or Australia. It's a new "cheap for America" version which has much more basic interior plastics, features, engines, suspension setups etc. It's being designed to compete against the Corolla (literally), rather than be a small premium. Yes, at this point it's left it more expensive than the Golf - but the Golf was never a volume model for them anyway. They used to sell way more Jettas than Golfs. Will be interesting to see if the MK7 Golf has an "American" version too.

    It should be noted that there are a lot of unhappy America Volkswagen fans that wish they could get the European Jetta (the one we will get).

    Again, you're looking at a country who's top selling "car" is a 3T truck, lol
    Just look at Australia, a country who's men (used to, still do?) lust after 6L V8's etc. When it came time to release the Golf R, due to VGA thinking that people wouldn't be able to understand that a 2L Turbo is better than a 3.2L V6, the dropped the price of the R by $7k over the previous R32. No other country got a price drop - only us.

    The 2.5L Golf motor in the USA is rubbish. The average USA person just couldn't change from 8L trucks to 1.2 and 1.4L hatchbacks...

    Again... no chance. I never fails to surprise me why people on these forums expect VGA to be able to do something that no other car manufacturer can do. Did you look at the price of any other manufacture? No one has comparable pricing with the USA. And when we've got less population Australian wide than New York (state), when we have our own ADR's rather than simply using the EU's or USA's regulations, and we we're so far away from where these cars are being built, and have such a small market and such expensive land/real estate and wages that local manufacturing isn't an option, it will never happen.
