If however you've got a 2007 or order MKV and you are ready for a new car (for whatever reason), then the MK6 is as good a car to purchase than anything else out there, and it's just different enough from the MK6 to be "new" and yet similar enough to instantly feel right at home in
I should clarify what I meant which was if you're happy with the Mark V and had no intention of getting a new car in the near future the Mark VI is not a big enough change to really justify the change especially when an all new model the Mark VII is coming out in a few years.

On the other hand if you're ready for a new car there is no reason not to buy a Mark VI, there's nothing wrong with it but don't expect any dramatic changes under the surface as everything is pretty well untouched from the Mark V including the platform (new platform for the Mark VII will give bigger engine choices etc).

I'm new to VW and really for me it's about timing. If the current new model was the MkV then I would've happily bought one (although I haven't driven one or even sat in one) as I think it's a great looking design but when I saw the MkVI it won me over. So long as the MkVI isn't a lemon I don't care whether it's better or worse than the MkV. I just hope it's a good car...I have a feeling it will be btw..

I truly understand though that someone with a MkV might not want to 'upgrade' to a MkVI as I have the supercharged version of the Mini Cooper S and have never wanted the current turbo model. I don't like the look of it and it wouldn't be enough of an 'upgrade' for me...

Thanks for posting that. Here's a saying I came across - "People who buy cars they don't need with money they don't have in order to impress others who don't care."

I calculate about a 13.45% saving for that (allocated $400 for dealer tints... if they're charging you anymore than that, you should be getting it done elsewhere). I also presumed you are getting manual since you didn't mention DSG. If you are getting DSG, then that'd be an 17.75% saving (unlikely you're getting the DSG, lol).

So I'd say that the only one getting ripped off is the dealer! lol

And there is still enough improvements on the MK6 linup to warrant the upgrade. The better interior quality is a big one.
I will have to disagree with the better interior quality argument of the MKVI. I have looked very carefully at the interior of the MKVI and although there is more "bling" in the form of faux aluminim trim, to the keen observer, one will spot the cost cutting.

e.g. Instead of a chromed metal catch on the glove box, the MKVI now has a rubberised plastic one. The remote button for the fuel hatch on the MKV has been deleted in the MKVI. They have also reduced the pocket space in the front doors. The plastics in the dash are of a slightly lower quality. The only obvious carry over item is the centre console and rear aircon vents.

While the interior of the MkV might look austere, it is in line with traditional German interior styling (just compare it with the interiors of BMW).

For that price, I'd rather buy an R with less options.

I agree. Really once you break beyond the 50/51K price point on a GTI, you should really start looking into a R with a few less options.
    MK6 GTI 3 Door - Candy White - DSG - Sunroof - 18" Detroit - ACC - PA - RC - MDI - BT - RNS510.

Unless they actually want those options, and have a budget of $57k max....

If you purchased a Golf R in the same spec (but with RVC as the R doesn't come with Park Assist but has the the Front/Rear PDC as standard), the "Drive Away" cost with the same % discounts kpatel85 has been quoted for the GTI would be $61,512.46 - or a $4962.46 premium over the GTI.

The other thing is, as people have been saying in numerous threads, the R has different driving characteristics to the GTI...
