I agree. Really once you break beyond the 50/51K price point on a GTI, you should really start looking into a R with a few less options.

I checked out the R. Best price with all the options was 62K...over my budget.

I calculate about a 13.45% saving for that (allocated $400 for dealer tints... if they're charging you anymore than that, you should be getting it done elsewhere). I also presumed you are getting manual since you didn't mention DSG. If you are getting DSG, then that'd be an 17.75% saving (unlikely you're getting the DSG, lol).

So I'd say that the only one getting ripped off is the dealer! lol

Its a GOLF GTI MK6 - 5Dr DSG
(dealer is charging $495 for tints - well according to the price on the contract) - but still...overall good saving it seems?

I will have to disagree with the better interior quality argument of the MKVI. I have looked very carefully at the interior of the MKVI and although there is more "bling" in the form of faux aluminim trim, to the keen observer, one will spot the cost cutting.

e.g. Instead of a chromed metal catch on the glove box, the MKVI now has a rubberised plastic one. The remote button for the fuel hatch on the MKV has been deleted in the MKVI. They have also reduced the pocket space in the front doors. The plastics in the dash are of a slightly lower quality. The only obvious carry over item is the centre console and rear aircon vents.

While the interior of the MkV might look austere, it is in line with traditional German interior styling (just compare it with the interiors of BMW).

I've had both and think the MK6 interior is much better and less rattles. There are some things i like about both but the MK5 certainly wasn't up to the Audi standard, whereas the MK6 is getting closer and has a better quality feel about it.

The blue LCD aircon and RCD500 display in the MK5 looked very cheap as well as the plastic around the aircon dials. Good to see they have re-thought the centre air vent too, that design was the source of many rattles and makes the job of getting the head unit out overly complicated.

There are signs of cost cutting on the MK6, like plastic on the front of the speedo/tacho instead of the purple glass - the plastic scratches very easily. The fuel tank release is another one but i can live without that .

Overall i don't think it would worry most people as the price comes in lower than the previous models. The cost cutting is also another reason why i personally wouldn't go overboard with options.

Why? If you wanted those options in the first place why would you want to buy a car without them? Doesn't make any sense.

You may as well remove those options from the GTI and save if they're not something you want.

Of course the same applies to the 118 TSI or the 90 TSI. You should buy the car you want with the options you want.

Perhaps it would make sense if, upon reflection, a person would rather have AWD, more power & torque and some of the other unique R features over the options that made the price of their well-optioned GTI close to the price of a less-well-optioned R.

No doubt there certainly has been some cost-cutting and cheapening of the GTI's interior in the Mark VI GTI - - - but is the fuel door now just a flap that is locked and unlocked with the rest of the doors?

Yep. It's a good feature. I have it on the Polo GTI - I quite like it.

Nothing wrong with that, sometime simple is better, and still locks when you lock the car.

Hey In one of the new magazines I have read this month, It actually says how the MKVI is miles ahead of the MKV interior. Just a thought. Its either Motor, Top Gear or something I have read this month.

It says how the money has been better spent, to make the interior "much better than the MKV's".

Apparently they were made in south africa also.. I'll try and find the article.
