Just get them painted then. Apart from the lack of a machined finish (slightly more reflective) and the .5" in more in tyre profile, they'll look virtually identical in photos, or whilst in motion on the roads.
Oh sorry! Those actually were the 18" Detroit cause I couldn't find a picture of the 17's painted. It's just to show up close the detail so that people would hopefully be able to see that it won't be that hard to get a bodyshop to paint them.
G-rig mentioned that Johnc had his 19" Huffs (which look like Detroits) painted in this method. Here is a link to some pictures of his. It's clear that they are painted in the method I mention (and that the factory does on the 18" Detroits), but from those pictures it's a medium metallic gray colour rather than black. Anyway - it is possible, it wouldn't cost too much, but I would only do this if you COULD NOT have 18" wheels, cause $1200 is great value for the upgrade from the factory.
I was quoted $45,098.90 (total on road) by one of those 'fleet companies', yesterday, on a MY10 GTI with the following specifications:
5 door
18" Detroit alloys
SatNav
Dynaudios
RVC
Tinted windows
I make that out to involve a discount of around 12%. That's not bad given no haggling has taken place; just a 10 minute telephone call with the fleet company (during which I told them, correctly, that I qualified for the corporate discount). Of course it's one thing to get a quote and another thing for it to be honoured.
The only thing, right now, that's stopping me from pushing the button on the order is that I haven't quite made up my mind whether I want to hold out for the R.

welcome to the forums mate!
The price is pretty good. Even more impressive is that we've got a newbie that on their 2nd post, already understands car pricing enough to have accurately determined the % discount they're receiving! (This is rare, trust me! hehe).
I don't think that you can go wrong with either the GTI or the R. They are two different cars, one providing a spirited (FWD) drive and minimal turbo lag, the other being more laid back (AWD), with 190kg additional weight, and with a larger turbo which comes in at higher RPMs etc.
You could always go test drive an Audi S3 to see whether you like feel and drive of it. The performance charactistics should be pretty much similar to what the R will be![]()

Ok boys! I noticed in the signature of forum member Ozram that he has 17" Genuine GTI Rims - Black shadow effect. So after a pm to him, I've got you some actualy pictures of 17" Denver wheels, painted the same as 18" Detroits!
Ozram has a thread about it called My refurbed GTi wheels over in the Wheels & Suspension forum.
Here is a picture of them on the car...
So as I said, if you have the 17" Denver's already and don't want to have to cough up $3000+ to get the 18" Detroits, or if you (or your wife) don't like the ride quality of the 18" wheels, just take them to get painted! It looks hot![]()
