The other thing you could do is, if you really get stuck with the 17's, you could take them to a painter to have them paint them to look the same as the 18" Detroits (you know, with the black interior to the wheel and 'spoke' sides etc).

How is it dodgy? You know that a large portion of alloy wheels are painted right? Including the 17" GTI wheels, 18 and 19" R wheels etc etc.
That's why it can be so cheap to repair them, because you just sand them back, bog fill, and respray. I've seen pictures on these forums (and VW Vortex) of people how have painted their 17" GTI wheels. Not specifically to match the 18" Detroit. Usually they've been all black, or had the wheel interior and spoke sides as a medium grey colour instead of black. Any competend car body shop should be able to help you out :)

Edit: This picture is of an 18" Detroit, so you can see the detail of the black paint done at the factory.
I haven't seen the 18" Detroit in person (well, not on a stationary car), so I'm not sure whether the facia is just painted (like the 17") or whether it's actually polished or diamond cut or something. But a bodyshop can certainly do the black paintwork as shown on this picture so you'll get most of the visual effect you're after :)
I must carry Ms Daisy with me all teh time, cos bugger me, I prefer the drive and handling with the 17's and not the 18's...
must be getting too old... Is there a VW accessory on Maverick's list fr a VW blankie for my knees so I can have that whilst I sip my cocoa???
:)
Detroits are a machined fascia, clear coated. IMHO, I'd prefer a painted fascia, as opposed to a machined one. easier to repair, and less chance of yellowing / peeling clearcoat in teh years to come...
But that's the thing. When i ordered the car, i didn't really care about the 18's still don't, but after seeing a few i kind of like them now.
As i have not yet seen the 17's i will not look into getting 18's. Who knows i may like the look of the 17's, or not mind them.
All the GTI's i have seen have been 18" wheels.
Also i already had a ready made new car which means i didn't have to wait 6 months for one, if i got the 18's then i will be ordering a new make from the factory and waiting 6 months. So i lived with getting the 17s
