I recall my missus and I being served by a Mediterranean looking gentleman at Norris just north of Brisbane. We were on our way to see some show houses and took a slight detour that day to see the Polo GTI. Wasn't aware then of the backlog of orders.
My wife calls him the consummate car salesman. He's slick. Yes, the hair evenbut I thought he was ok. He even offered a test drive on the car and was offering a Polo GTI sometime in August (this was back in February) cos an order had just been cancelled.
Since I am currently out of the country, I have been dealing with Austral online. Been directed to two different guys for two different cars. First one was fairly inflexible about price. But that could have been cos it was a base model. The second one has been more flexible and responsive for a higher spec model.
Right now, we are only planning to be in Brisbane in July so that makes it a bit difficult to negotiate and pay for stuff cos I don't even have an account set up down under yet.
Question: if I were to spec a completely new car today, how long before delivery for a Golf GTI? Looking at some of the prices here, it seems some guys are getting prices similar to the current driveway promotion anyway.

Theres still hope to take advantage of the driveaway pricing, i secured a pretty much stock as a rock black 3 door manual for $39400 driveaway, MDI was the only option
Nice, that's just a tad cheaper than what I paid for mine but I got mdi, bt and a few minor throw in accessories. I put money down in march tho.
At the end of the day, it's no use getting flustered over a few hundred bucks. But as an example, the first dealer I visited asking for a price gave me $45k for the same car. I laughed in his face and walked away. Didn't even bother to negotiate
yeah i totally agree and had a similar experience. I rang barloworld in glen waverley (vic) and spoke to an asian guy called Danny. told him that i wanted a gti but hadnt decided on manual or dsg. We made an appt and he assured me i could try both. Once i got there he renegged on the DSG saying it was too hard to get out of the lot, but allowed me to test drive the the manual. then i came in to talk business and he was shocking. he wouldnt give me a brochure and said i should come back on the weekend if i wanted a good deal. So then i went down to camberwell and spoke to guys that were more than willing to make a deal. The haggling process went for about 30 seconds, quoted 39k and i said if he could do a bit better than that then we'd have a deal. Gotta say im new to the forum but this site has been a fantastic tool to understand what is good value and what isnt. I agree that dealers and salesman should make money just like the rest of us but members of this site help keep them honest!
suprising to hear that about barloworld glen waverly, i got excellent service with Nick, i guess its all down to the sales rep at the end and how much they enjoy their job.

I would be very wary in dealing with Austral, if you do some research on this forum and other VW forums you'll see they have an appalling track record that has persisted despite many changes of management and staff (including one initiated by VW). Make sure everything is documented, they put everything in writing (and make sure they haven't worded things to give them an out) and even then expect to end up less then happy with the outcome. Highway Auto are an established dealer that helped me out after my screwing by Austral and there are plenty of people who have been happy with their service, there have been some changes with Highways sales staff since I purchased but I haven't heard of any bad experiences like you hear about Austral.
Do a search of this forum (the Mark V forum is a good place to start but also search the rest) and you'll get an idea what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the heads up, Maverick.
I am trying to source for a car that I can pick up ideally within a day or two of landing in the country so I was scouring carsales.com.au for cars within that area and they had ready stock with the specs I was looking at...
I guess if the car is already there, it should minimize any problems.
BTW, does VW Australia require you to go back to the same dealership where you purchased the car to maintain warranty? Or can you go to any other VW Australia approved dealers/service centers?
