Coming home, hopefully tomorrow, a GTi Addidas edition, white, reverse camera, park assist. It's a lease, with an FBT value of 52k, but price a bit lower than that. 48k drive away as a lease.

If the lease paperwork doesn't get there in the morning (it should) it may be Monday for delivery. All because my Polo GTi went from a May delivery to a 'maybe' September and 'probably' 2012... the order was placed in December 2010. Then on this forum people who ordered in mid Feb had all the numbers for a September delivery and my dealer STILL had nothing for his orders.

So when I saw the white GTi on the floor..... I changed the lease.

I ... gave them the specs i wanted and told them to give me a good price. He came back with a first offer of $45.8K! - when i saw it i couldnt help but smile lol! I told him $45.5K and after going back to check we ended up shaking hands on the $45.5K.

The lowest i got with other dealers was $48 and $46.5 (with a lot talking and pushing on from my end though).

Another approach in such a situation is to say "Okay, $45,800 as long as you include a reversing camera ($500)."

Makes for more of a "win-win": dealer gets his price and you get an essential option at a bargain price.

Seems a shame to add thousands of dollars worth of options and have a $50k car without the RVC when it is so little extra and will make your car more attractive to buyers when you re-sell. Could also save you from hitting something that would otherwise be unseen.

Rvc essential? WTF? I've driven cars for 17 years and I've never had one in any car nor used one. I've used pdc in a BMW and Benz and although helpful weren't deal breakers. I've also owned large landcruisers, hilux, jeep grand Cherokees and never had issues with reversing.
Maybe I'm a good Parker, but rvc isn't essential and would maybe make 1% of buyers say no
But that negotiating tech is good and I used it to get extras with my order

Essential for me.

But if not quite essential, then highly desirable in a circa $50k car when the RVC is available for such a small additional cost.

At $500 the RVC is the second-least expensive factory option and so very good value indeed on the GTI as an RVC adds around $2,300 to the lower-spec Golfs.

After transmission has been selected, it is certainly the most compelling first option to add to a GTI in my book - - - that's Autosalbei's Big Book of Accessories and Options.

Bear in mind though that neither your self-proclaimed parking prowess (very impressive, thanks for sharing) nor your lack of use of an RVC in the past has any bearing on the usefulness of RVCs for the general population and so is largely irrelevant. One could refuse to adopt any number of technological advances, from fuel injection to airbags, on the basis that one had never used them before. The fact remains that most RVC users on this forum are first-timers and those who comment seem to swear by them.

I just don't see the point in eschewing new technology simply because you have done without it since 1994.

It does not matter how you look at it, an RVC would provide advantages no matter how good a parker you like to tell people you are.

As I mentioned, I've used cars with pdc and what not, and although helpful, they weren't deal breakers for me. I guess I prefer other oPtions in my car, such as decent stereo, nice wheels. In fact, all the other options, unless standard, I wouldn't really be fussed with.
I wasn't trying to come across as being unreal at parking, but to me, stuff like park assist and tO a lesser extent rvc is something that isnt really necessary.

An RVC is very different to "PCD and whatnot". I too have had PDC in the past and have turned it off. But I'll never purchase a car without an RVC again, given the choice... and the way car regulations are going, we probably won't have that choice anyway in a few years.

It's been discussed just recently in the R Observations thread. Those who have have the RVC, no matter how awesome they are at parking, or how long they've driven, speak highly of it.

Yes, "Walbjj", I get that you don't see the value in PDC or RVC. But it is not just for poor parkers and should not be dismissed simply because you have done without an RVC in the past.

But for mine, given the choice between:

- a GTI for $40,000 (or considerably more in most cases); and

- a GTI for $40,500 with a device that eliminates a major blind spot, adds resale value (it costs $2300 to add to a TSI) and in one instant could prevent very costly repairs or injury, I know what I would do.

As for PDC for around $700, I never saw the value either. But a reversing camera for $500? Far more useful and the factory-fitted auto bargain of this century, without a doubt, especially given an aftermarket RVC costs well over $1,000.

Can anyone name a better value factory option from any auto manufacturer? If all other options offered such value they'd be close to half their current price!
