actually, i got my mk6 gti for a little over $40k. ive since modified it to how i like, which was only a few extra thousand, but its still way under what i would have spent for an R. for me, a gti does all i need. i dont need the awd, and mine is as powerful as i need it to be

I know this is a bit off topic but since we are on the subject of pricing and positioning, any idea where the new BMW 1 series will be priced at? There's 2.0l turbocharged model which is rated for 245hp, with Valvetronic and Double VANOS and RWD. Seems like a nice place to be ... between the GTI and R.

I know Bimmers are traditionally overpriced here but I thought I recalled they might position the 1 series at a lower price to get some of the market that the Golf is getting.

IMO if they do adjust the price it will still be unlikely to drive out much cheaper than now I'd guess they will just start with a more bare bones model and make it back with options that no one will go with out.

Just thought I'd let oyu all know, a Mk6 GTI ED35 was parked in a servo yesterday on the Mooruduc Hwy, heading down to the mornington penninsular. Those wheels are hideous in the flesh, they look like someone's commodore or falcon is missing their tacky chromies from the northern 'burbs!

Have you seen the pics of the new 1 series yet? Even if the price was right, I wouldn't get one based solely on the way it looks.

The first pics looked like a mini SUV. But the recent videos of it that I saw, it actually looked very Golf-ish from the rear 3 quarters.
