There have been many instances in other threads where posts that weren't firmly on topic (especially ones that result in "banter" between various posters) were swiftly removed and warnings posted by the moderators to stay on topic. They usually seem to have been threads where the moderators didn't otherwise participate.

Note: I never mentioned anything about "BS"

Back on topic - How many years was the Pirelli announced before the end of the MkV's lifespan?

The Pirelli was announced in mid 2007. So about 2 1/2 years before the end of the MkV.

The Pirelli wasn't released for that purpose in Germany. It was brought out to Australia for that purpose in mid 08 but that was a local decision.

Posts don't get removed unless personal insults and fighting has ensued (at least I don't remove posts). If it hasn't broken down to that level, it's usually because people start whinging about the topic... In all seriousness, there is so much off topic banter in this place that I'd have to quit my day job to delete everything that wasn't "firmly on topic". In any case, I'm not going to get into arguments on that topic in here.

Back on topic. The Pirelli came out literally in the last year in Australia. I think it was only around 6 months before the first MK6's arrived - although the MK6 GTI didn't come for another 6 months after that. But that's just not the situation this time around. So maybe we'll see a third MK6 GTI special edition before the MK7 arrives.

Edit: Just saw triode's posts. Yeah - so it came to Australia significantly after Europe then if it was first available there in 2007...

But the simple fact is, just like all the other hot hatches available, and the ORIGINAL Golf GTI, those who want that style, won't be buying the 5 door "family" version... which unfortunately includes the Golf 35 in Australia. Stick with the regular Golf GTI in the configuration you want, and then add the extras you want... including K04 kit if that's what you want.
I have to admit I got confused a long time ago by this conversation.. is the point one is better tan the other or that one has more credibility than another ? or is it that 3 door vehicles are struggling for relevance in this market and alignment with some historical artifact will provide it.. I am sure no one really cares except forum members for some reason.. has the same credence as colour making your car go faster really..

It's that "Hot hatches", and the original Golf GTI, are 3 door. They look better. As they're the original style, they have more credibility and tradition. And as I said, there is hot hatch after hot hatch that is 3 door only. The Golf GTI and R are one of the few hot hatches available both in the original 3 door style AND the more family-friendly 5 door style (not that I've had any issues with kids or adults getting into the back, ever).

If you look in the earlier model forums, MK1, and MK2 etc, the 3 door models are the prized posessions, the most desireable models etc. And I mean, lets be honest, if you're wanting to drive and maintain a car that old, practicality isn't your top priority, so the only "pro 5 door argument" goes right out the door.

The worst thing about Australia is that we're often just not given the choice anymore on many cars. There are just so many cars available, Volkswagen or otherwise, which are available in 3 door overseas, but aren't available here due to the "more is better" attitude of Australians. That's a real shame. They should be available in both the 3 door AND 5 door versions - even if those who want a 3 door have to wait for it to be built and imported.

But when it's a hot hatch, where there are two versions, it's inexcusable not to be given the choice.

I personally really like this Golf GTI 35. But who is this aimed at? It's supposed to be "hotter" and "more GTI" than the standard GTI. Yet it sadly isn't available in Australia in its most original, traditional, and desirable form. Just in it's "family friendly" compromised form.

Have a look at the video again. The lady walks past her original MK1 GTI, and hops into the GTI 35. A 3 door GTI 35. Have a look at all the press shots. Again, 3 door.

Just like cars are meant to have 4 wheels, hot hatches are meant to be 3 door.

Again, I'm glad that the Golf is one of the few hot hatches to have a 5 door model so that people such as yourself can buy one and still carry your kids in it without having to slide a seat forward for them to get in. But I see no point in Golf GTI's, 35's, R's etc if they stop selling them in the traditional 3 door form.

VGA already knows my opinion on this. They were never going to release the R in Australia in 3 door, until enough people told the dealers they'd lost their sales, got deposits back, and walked away... you know how that ended.

Anyway, that's the last post I'll put here on that topic.

C'mon guys we're all here because we love our Golfs - regardless of how many doors. Can't we just agree to disagree please and get back to modding, tweaking, and havin fun?

For me it wasn't a case of disagreement more mild amusement as I am only a recent Hatch / VW convert so all the nuances of owning one are somewhat new. I am pretty much the only person in the car at any time and even with the "Camry" family would have 3 of us in there.

To be absolutely honest the reason I got a 5 over 3 door was because I wanted to be able to put my suit jacket on the back seat easily. Never gave the "hot hatch" 10 commandments a flick through to see if I was compliant. The hardest question was is it worth the extra coin for the R over the GTI and lets not start that 500 page thread here again.

As for Australians thinking more is better.. possibly, when they go to introduce a Green rating on housing it will be interesting to see how that thinking prevails. I think it is more to do with laziness.. just like most folk like to drive right up to the front parking space of the shops go in and come out. Fiddling around with seats and getting people and stuff in and out falls into that "I could not be fukced" category.

Also we have a love of space, cause we have lots of it, the markets where the golf is really popular have cramped roads and parking so compact cars with lower degrees of convenience are accepted. Look at Australia's driving icon.. the HSV commodore, damn the the spoiler on that has its own orbit.

Does a 3 door look better.. damned if I know, I always think the owners have been short changed, but then I figure GTI owners look at R drivers and think the same thing.. it is just perspective. The era and definition of "Hot Hatch" has come and gone , it is now mainstream and the manufacturers will supply the product where the demand is met.. seems like 3 Door Hatches are becoming more and more collectable

You pretty much summed it up for me there SilvrFoxX.

I had a chuckle at your real reason for getting the 5 door too because that's pretty much it for me. I'm lazy, so I've forever throwing my suit in the back, footy gear, etc.

Personally, I prefer the look of the 5-door Golf Gti and the 3 door for the Polo Gti. The polo rear doors look too small imo and don't complement the look. Whereas I find the Golf looks more balanced with the 5 doors.

    3 doors better than 5?
    Golf R better than GTI?

We all have our own opinions, and they are just that!
We all buy on preference or and budget, and I for one certainly don't feel short changed for owning a GTi over an R
I feel darn lucky to have the car I've got and appreciate and enjoy it daily, although only two of us, still prefer 5 dr
    as I've got older...much older
Sure there will always be a better car......way out of my budget hehe but.........
beauty is in the eye of the beholder, opinions are individual, no one car is better than the other, it just suits each
    individual better
