I understand that two sales are never the same nor accurate. So that's why it's best to have some buyers/sellers talk about the market prices.
Redbook lists prices based on the statistics of purchases within Australia - so it's a pretty accurate guide....

Thanks Steve. I think it just shows it's 'possible' to sell a 3yo golf with 30000km on ODO for more than 70%. Unless you got a huge huge huge discount on your new car that you did not tell us.

Can some more people share their experience with 2nd hand cars please?

According to several car valuation site, this car which is valued at $32000 now, is having a resale value of $19000 in 3 years time with 30000KM on the ODO. This depreciation is much much higher than I anticipated.(Please forgive me here as I had no experience with new car before).

However, looking at carsales.com.au, it appears most seller will put at least $24000 for a 3-year old 30000km 118TSI. Again, I cannot tell the actual dealt price for these private sales.

Can people with experience of selling/buying 2nd hand golf shed some lights on the actual private resale valuation of golfs? If it’s really as bad as all the valuation sites suggest, I will just let the dealer take my deposit now..Well, not the best time to regret…
No-one knows what the price will be in 3 years time. The Mark VII will be out than so that will impact prices to a degree especially as it's a whole new model and not a revamp like the Mark VI.

Sounds like you're better off putting your money into a investment and buying a bomb for a few thousand, depreciation will be minimal on that.

I understand that noone can predict. And I didn't ask that right? I only want to ask about other members' past experience with second hand cars, which is still the best estimator.

Asking on a Golf VI forum about the resale of a car that has only been on the market for < 12 months is not the best estimator at all, the Mark VI is different to the Mark V, plus the market has been up and down of late and the Mark VII will be due out soon which is a major replacement and not just a minor upgrade like the V to the VI.

If the car you pick turns out to be a lemon your resale will suffer and there are heaps of other factors that can play into the resale as well. If you like the car buy it otherwise get something cheap like a Corolla which will have consistent resale but is boring to drive and bland to own.

a Golf is about as good as it gets with regards to a car holding its value; I traded my wifes MKV and got about 63% on a basic Auto Comfortline that was 3 years and 7 months old, thats a fantastic result, I could have got more on a private sale but I couldnt be bothered

buy something used if you worried about depreciation; check out the depreciation on a Commodore, I know someone who just bought a late 2007 commodore Omega with 60,000km's on the clock for $15,000, thats almost 60% depreciation in under 3 years....

Thank you for your info. Do you mind telling us how many kms was on the ODO when you sold it? I am not obsessive with these detail numbers, just try to get a better idea. I always 'knew' that golf keeps good value when compared to most other cars, that's why I didn't do a detailed research before I put down the deposit. It's a bad habit of making assumptions here..
