Golf 77TSI Turbo(?) issue - Surge then no power
Hey Guys.
I've just had a weird issue with (I believe) the turbo on my 2012 Golf 77TSI Manual.
I was pulling out of my driveway, and received a sudden and unexpected surge of power, after which the car was very sluggish and had no power. Flooring it in second at 2000rpm only gained speed slowly, whereas it would normally knock your hat off. It still drove relatively smoothly - just not quickly.
Turning off the ignition for a few minutes and driving off again appeared to resolve the issue - the car was responding normally.
It seemed like an issue with the Turbo - I suspect it overboosted, and then went into limp home mode(?) - Although there was no "Check Engine" light or Error Codes reported.
Running my VIN through the VW maintenance website shows it's due for service campaign 24v9, which I believe involves fitting a shim to the wastegate - I suspect this is potentially the culprit?
Given my lack of mechanical knowledge, I wanted to
a) Check if my diagnosis is in the ballpark? What other issues could potentially cause this?
b) Work out if my car is likely to be safe to drive for a few days until I can get it to the service center? (i.e. I'm not going to do more damage if I continue to drive it?)
