The websites I quote review all sorts. I would have thought a comparo with maxda 3 neo and corolla ascent would be in order just to see how much better golf is even in its lowliest form
No, Journalists would prefer to drive more interesting cars....
Story about the new Renault Magane RS250 vs story about the new cheapest lowest power Golf. I know which story I would rather cover if I was a journalist.

That comparison would make interesting reading...
You would hope so. I want to know their thoughts on it!!
I'm also looking into the 1.2 as a replacement for my MKV 2.0 TDI. The difference between insurance for me is almost $300...!
As in the 77TSI is $300 cheaper to insure for you than the MKV 2.0 TDI?

To the image-obsessed "h8rz", please don't forget that The People's Car came first, then the upmarket models. Having grown up in Europe with Golfs all around me, the Golf was the vehicle of choice around the cities because it was the best vehicle your money could buy, but it wasn't considered a premium brand. The offerings from Opel, Ford, Peugeot, etc. didn't even come close, and the Eastern Bloc contraptions... well, they spoke, coughed and spluttered for themselves. The "premium" image that VW has these days is a recent thing - the Golf was a respected vehicle back home, but hardly a luxury vehicle. VW would like to become world's no. 1 manufacturer and the only way to do this is to sell more and the easiest way of doing that is by expanding their customer base. So if Golf's humble roots offend you, please feel free to disassociate yourself from the brand.
To the rest, I love my 77TSI - it does exactly what it was intended to do. It gets me to work and back (a massive 2.5km each way), to the shops (2km) and when I do embark on a lengthy 10+km trek, it swallows up the kays with ease, all while using sweet bugger all fuel. And as a self-confessed Germanophile, you simply can't beat German engineering.
Enough of my banter...
Great post Perun. I reckon this is one of the points that makes the Golf great - it (mainly) attracts buyers who want a great car, but don't want anything too ostentatious that carries a truckload of image with the badge.
Even the high-end VWs still tend to be judged by buyers as much on their merits as on their image. Which works fine, because they're great cars. I think of VW buyers as smart buyers.
