Mentions the turbo lag and the relatively poor value for money of the 77TDI

"But is the Golf 77TDI the money saver it seems on paper?

Sadly no. Its performance deficit, combined with the fact that you have to add $2200 for decent equipment levels, means there is only a $2300 gap to the significantly more powerful, enjoyable and only slightly less frugal 103TDI Comfortline. No contest.

Alternatively, if that’s too much of a stretch, save your cash and choose the petrol powered (yet also impressively economical) Golf 90TSI with Comfort pack and pocket the $2700 saving.

No matter which way you look at it, the Golf 77TDI lives in the shadow of its more talented brethren. "

I guess that sums it up?

Yeah - basically. The advise to go to the 103TDI if you wanted diesel is what I said, and the advise to go to the 90TSI (with comfort pack) if all you're looking for is value (plus some comfort) is what pologti18t... the only thing bought to the table by that article is an endorsement of this forum's advice! hehe

You would think that VW would have come to a similar conclusion themselves before releasing such a model.

Oettinger will take the (1.6) 77TDI to 110kw/330NM which is more than a 103TDI for less than the $2300 difference .....

So the 77TDI may actually be not too bad .......

You'd get better performance and same spec (Comfortline) for a few $$$ less ....

That 77TDI will be awesome in the new Polo I think.

EDIT: Incidentally it is also better than the 90TSI chipped (100kw/247NM) ....

Except the report seemed to suggest that the 77TDI had heaps of turbo lag. Not sure if a reflash will fix that or make it "seem" even worse.

Check it out and decide for yourself.

From the graph, torque is coming on at the same time, but instead of stopping at 250Nm @ 1500rpm, it keeps going till 330Nm @ 1900rpm, and rather than the peak torque stopping at 2500rpm, it stays until 2800rpm. It then drops off about the same rate as the stop torque, but is still ~80Nm up over stock at 4500rpm. So this is only an improvement with no disadvantage.
Power starts outpacing stock from the get go at, ~1300rpm. By the time you hit 2000rpm you're already ~23kw up on stock, which means you're already over the 81kw peak which the stock achieves at 4200rpm. Power continues to grow to 110kw at 3800rpm. At 4500rpm you're still ~25kw up on stock. So again, only advantages.

So I wouldn't say that this elimates turbo lag, but I would say you're going to get a much bigger grin on your face once the turbo does spool up!
