Even if you did it, driving a "fake" R is a bit tryhardish....

Think about it like wearing a fake tag heuer.... Looks the same, you may fool your mates, but deep down, you know it ain't the real deal and that will forever bug you......

If you put 65k into that ratty cl golf, it would be twice as fast as a standard new r though..... Haha.

If you could find a r wreck I think it would be very possible to do the conversion for much less. Would be a hell of work though..

These are all options on the R too - excluding the headunit, and Bluetooth - which is factory standard as of MY12.

At the end of the day, as others have said, there are a myriad of small (some may think insignificant) changes all over the car that are designed for a high-performance application, that won't be on a 77TSI. VW will have spent millions performing extensive testing and R&D to make sure the car is more than the sum of its parts, and to ensure that all the performance enhancements compliment (and don't compromise) each other.

At any rate, the actual list of part differences would be huge. Just (!) the 4Motion system alone involves a revised floorpan, extra driveshafts, modified gear/transfer case, control systems and software... there have been attempts to retrofit 4Motion to GTIs in the states, and it's an epic undertaking.

People used to convert standard falcons into GTHO replicas & Toranas into L34s. At the end of the day, even if it looked exactly the same & the performance was equal/better, you still had a replica.

Would be much easier to do the 77 into a GTI and more in line with that than turn one into an R.

    HAHAHAHA this is so funny!

I just got rid of my 77TSI and bought a GTI.

    This is the difference

    77TSI =

    GTI =

EDIT: i.e. the 77tsi is a nice car that makes you look like a discerning car buyer. The GTI is all of that but permanently fixates a stupid grin on my face

Yeah that would be like doing the unthinkable and putting R tails on a GTI

Lol! Talk about a response. No need to get the GTi/R fanboi sarcasms out.......

    I was only inquiring.

My knowledge is limited to Japanese cars and being this is my second car, I'd thought I'd ask the question since looking from a fresh perspective, you literally pay 2.5 cars for a single more powerful car. I'm trying to view it from the point of all that material to build 1.5 cars really equates to minor cosmetic changes + bigger engine + transmission + exhaust system for the R model.

Some folks think it's worth their money, some don't and we can leave it there.

But the point is you chose to spend 10 times an old second hand one, simply for a newer car with some more equipment.

    Because it was your choice.

no different in other makes either.
Holden Omega is $44k ('sif anyone pays that); Calais V is $67k. Is it worth $23k more? Probably not but still cheaper than trying to add the parts to an Omega.

Keep in mind that you can probably negotiate a bigger $$ discount off the R than you can the 77TSI as they have more margin in it.
