Does anyone know what sort of hit these cars are/will take on trade in value since all the negative publicity? My story is disturbingly similar to davewave's, with a bunch of other problems that have happened since 2010 including loss of power when driving uphill and a number of warranty repairs. I don't trust the car but not sure how badly I'll lose out now

Sell it as soon as it gets fixed and don't look back.

Here are some observations and discussions on resale value from last month when things blew up in the media Anyone tried trading in their VW the last few days.

But they certainly were trying to make out that it was my fault and that they were doing me a favor.
Sounds like they are trying to stop you thinking this is common so that they don't have to do a recall....
How did you convince them to repair it after the earlier dismissal?
And congratulations on how it has worked out

Nightmare come true. Please help, VW want to rebuild my engine.

I only read the first post and last post and no need to read anymore after you get the typical response from VW Australia that failure is the owners fault not there poorly designed engines. Don't be fooled as there are hundreds of these motors out there that have been replaced two and three times for same issue.

My Son asked for interest free loan to buy new car.
Gave him my 2Year old 118TSI with intermittent 2nd gear shudder instead. So now he is to have the Mechatronics replaced.
Bought 125TDI Passat. Became 130TDI on delivery. Nice car, but often wishing I still had the 118TSI.

I traded my 118tsi manual (basic model, 38000km) with 1 month left on the warranty. Got $16000 as a trade-in. I loved the car but was worried it would cause problems out of warranty.

Bought a second-hand 2012 GTI DSG (only 2200km on the clock)... great car. Fun to drive. Good reliable engine!

Am happy that I made the decision to let the 118TSI go

Trade in now vs keep it for a bit: two points of view.

While chatting amicably tho unhappily (our 118tsi has had both engine and clutches die, at under 30K, but replaced with no uncertainties under warranty) with my Service Manager just after the recall advice, she suggested not to get rid of the car for a few months. Wait til the flack has died down from the court case and recall, basically, and make sure any recalls are done and documented by copies of the work orders as well as stickers on RH front door hinge area.

Second point of view: friend just traded out of her VW Tiguan into an Audi. Got a very good deal because Audi knew her VW wasn't affected by the 118 and 7 speed issues, and were desperate to move stock because they were taking a hit from negative association with VW as a whole. VW dealers as such may be even more desperate to shift stock.

    Your call.

Have a MY11 (build Aug 2010) 118TSI DSG, 53K on the clock. Spoke to VW southyarra, They offered 14K buy back (not trade in) Trade in @ Mercedes was the same.

    Golf VI 118 TSI 7sp DSG MY09

My engine died yesterday as well. This is the second time. The first dead engine was at 15,000, now this one at 90,000.

I will also need clutch pack replaced for the third time and the mechatronics for the second time.

Total cost of repairs so far is probably not less than cost of a new car.

    Not. Happy. Jen.
