Catalytic Converter / EPC Warning Lights MK6 2012 Golf

    Hey,

I came to this forum for any help, so sorry for the newbie talk.

Just past 90,000 on my Golf 118 TSI 2012 EPC warning light show with the engine miss firing and engine rattle drove it shortly home, then gave it a start next morning Cat Converter light shows then EPC after a quick drive with still the engine firing and engine rattle.

I brought it brand new July 2012, so just out of warranty. Called the local dealer 20 km away, was told to bring it in. They weren't able to diagnose the problem and explained they will have to tear down the engine.

Long story short 3 weeks later, they still don't know the problem and haven't taken the head off yet. Worried about the time and $$$ its taking.

Any advise or assistance would be very helpful.

    Cheers,

    Ray

Hole in your piston from running lean and hot no doubt like so many other 118TSI's.

If they say they are going to tear down the engine then the dealer knows its suffered the fate that so many other 118TSI have.

Yes read the 118TSI thread for all the similar stories. Unfortunately these engines have a tendency to self-destruct.

Given its only just out of warranty Id be requesting the dealer/VW apply goodwill warranty and supply/install a replacement engine.

These are a known problem. The engine should last a lot longer than 3 years / 90,000km.

I don't recall hearing about any engines built after about 2012 having let go. Although older engines that have had the 24S4 campaign 'fix' applied, and even older rebuilt engines, have still blown. I expect VW has made many detail changes in the meantime that makes the engine less susceptible to failure. Can't say I personally would want to hold on to one beyond the warranty period however.

Yeh when I was working for VW I dont recall any newer vehicles coming back for any issues regarding the same engine issues. I took the chance as I really wanted a jetta in manual, 118 was the only option.
I guess I will probably be the best to be testing it as I will be driving many Ks with in the 3 years plus 2 years extended. Im quiet confident they have fixed it and updated software/engine components. I hope so because strangly I really like this engine its fun to drive and IMO the jetta just looks awesome.

Thanks for the replies, Yep cracked Piston. VW has agreed to pay for 100% of Parts and 30% of the Labour. So I'm still out of pocket about $1400.

They should be paying all of it. Damn VW cheats. Why should you have to pay $1,400 to repair an engine that has failed due to very well known and documented faults that VW have done nothing to rectify.

If i was you i would be fighting for them to pick up ALL of the labour costs. It's not your fault.

I would be going for full cost of labour given its just out of warranty. Others have had the full cost covered. The engine should last more than 3 years without a major rebuild. You have protection under consumer law.

Have you discussed with the dealership your rights under the statutory warranty that is provided under consumer law? I'd recommend you give the ACCC a call and ask them if they can explain to you what your rights are.

The others are correct, you should be getting the whole thing for free (providing you have a complete service history - it doesn't have to be VW dealerships).
