Only insurance companies write off vehicles. A warranty or dealer cannot do that? :S
I just took my 118tsi 2011 golf due to EPC and Catalytic Converter light on at 85k km.. have been told they have to replace the entire engine.. thankfully I got extended warranty when I brought it new.
However this is just the tip of the problems. .this repair is coming up to around $30k in warranty repairs yet there is no real sign of it being written off..
I have had 4 sets of clutches (2 sets replaced a month a part in 2014), as well as pretty much everything in the front of the car except the radiator..
I am perplexed that VW and the extended warranty are going to keep paying for repairs instead of writing it off.. I have almost got 2 whole cars. . Anyone else in this problem?

they don't actually write off vehicles under warranty.
I do know of a Volvo T60 that Volvo couldn't fix (often it came back from the workshop worse). They took the car back after 12 months and sold him a new one for a token fee. The new car was also a POS so they refunded his money. Most unusual for Australia.

Hi all,
Potentially adding another blown engine here.
Mk6 Comfortline wagon, 118TSi DSG. Built 07/10, delivered 04/11.
97,000 km's
Cyl 1: 160 psi, 2: 165 psi, 3: 90 psi, 4: 170 psi
This is the wife's. She's pissed off to say the least.
Engine check light 3 weeks ago (when on an emergency family trip in Newcastle) drove it back to Canberra in manual mode keeping it above 2000rpm. Got it to the dealership we bought it from the next day, they advised their computer couldn't talk to the car (blue oval) so booked it into VW, but 2 weeks later. They cleared the fault and said we could drive the car carefully. Got it to VW dealer last Thursday, within 2 hrs they diagnosed Misfire in Cyl. 3, and did a compression test. Now we have to wait another 2 weeks before their workshop engine bays are free to strip and seek guidance from VWA. I've read this whole thread and are convinced it's a rebuild or replacement engine. We have to pay VW $880 to strip it, regardless if it is repaired under goodwill or not. So three weeks without a car than another 14 days, don't see us having a car before Christmas. All the dealership loaners are booked out.
We bought the car second hand from a blue oval dealership, the car was traded in. It was originally bought and serviced in full from VW dealer here. Not owning a Golf before, the only issue I knew about was the DSG one, (Car has had 37G7 & 35C1 completed) so I felt reassured. Not feeling that now...
The car is out of warranty, we have a small one with the blue oval ($1000k) which should cover the strip fee, the VW dealer has been quite good, and will be pushing for full good will. either way will not be paying a cent and will be going to ACAT and ACCC, as this is certainly not fit for purpose!
My previous car was a tuned (throttlehappy bum dyno tune) MY06 Forest XT, and have always run Premium in the Golf (Prefer Shell V Power, but reading other posts I might change that to BP)
We have a 2001 323 Astina still going strong, have had numerous cars ranging from Nissan's, Toyota's and Mazda's, none had major engine troubles. The wifes old car was a Barina (Opal Corsa) which went through two timing chains and 2 head gaskets (the second gasket was because we followed the wrong workshop manual headbolt torque )
Will post updates

Definitely sounds like a hole in your #3 piston looking at those compression results. Either that or a burnt valve/failed piston rings etc leading to a loss in compression - but the hole in the piston is the most common by far for this engine. Sorry to hear but its all too common for this engine. All the best for the repair process.
The Barina 1.4L (Opel Corsa) was a rubbish engine too - just FYI as you mentioned that you had issues with that car. The 1.8L version that they used in the Astra of the same era was also rubbish.
Thanks Lucas,
Yeah the Opel engine was shocking, mostly plastic and thin cast elements. Seems they were on the limit, german engineering isn't what it is cracked up to be. I was looking at getting an Amarok for my next car, but unfortunately I will steer clear of VW now, which is a shame the ergonomics and other features in the Golf are great.
I have faith in the repair system, its the time of the road that is the most annoying. Least I am saving money on petrol...
That's a tough call, you plan to avoid VW because of a bad experience with a car purchased second hand and out of warranty? Whilst I would not have bought a second hand VW with a twincharger engine as there have been issues with them (but not with all of them), I know from experience that other VW engines perform flawlessly and VW's are generally a very good car.
Every manufacturer makes a dud from time to time (check out the issues Holden are having with the Captiva) but that should not taint every model they produce.
Cheers

Yes very good point George, I should elaborate, I was after a Diesel Amarok, still waiting the outcome of that scandal...
I have yet to hear back from VW, so this could all pan out fine, Like i said I have faith, but it is hard to keep emotions out of something like this. What's the saying? Once bitten twice shy?
Same issue with this combo in my 2013 Skoda Fabia vRS wagon. (Check out my thread in the Fabia sub folder - not able to post a link apparently).
9 weeks off the road now. 2 dealers, 2 hire cars.
At least VW Oz has been reasonable with that, even if the first cost $320 with a one way hire back to Canberra. Second was marked in a car park, so I might be up for the excess as well, though VW have agreed to address that once the hire is returned.
My compression went from 220psi to 108psi overnight during diagnosis.
Car has 66.5k kms and is 2.8 yrs old. Was brought in on special order (sunroof) long after the VW recall etc was established.
Am waiting to see what happens before I take up any action on the loss of asset value (still under new car lease).
