Good to hear that you weren't out of pocket (apart from the inconvenience). Given the history on these engines I'd suggest that it would have happened irrespective of the timing chain though this probably wouldn't have helped.

It's going to be that they put the young tech on the job with minimal/no supervision. One of my bugbears with dealer servicing is they use the lowest cost labour and charge the highest rates.

And if they stuff up they can usually get either VW or the customer to pay.

I know a major German brand on the lower north shore at one stage (early 2000s) had 2 qualified mechanics and 10 apprentices.

Another MY10 118TSI Golf (wagon) to add to the list with two cracked pistons. Happened about a week ago about 80km from home and the car was towed straight to the local VW dealer.

Have recently heard back that Head Office will cover 100% of costs of an engine replacement which I'm relieved about. Not sure if I'll hang on to the car, but will see how it behaves with the new engine ... and see how the DSG behaves too.

If it's a new engine you should be good for another 80,000km ;)

Seriously I think the engines getting built now are a lot better than those 5 years ago. Plus software has been changed to fix a lot of the issues.

It's quite possible that damage has been done to your old engine prior to the software updates to "fix" the issue. The new engine running the latest software from brand new should theoretically have a lot longer life expectancy.

So with a new engine and the latest software I'd be fairly confident that it should last another 5+ years.

As to whether to hang onto it that's a personal decision that only you can make. One has to question how much longer VW will continue to fix these cars for "free" and when they wipe their hands of the problem. You probably don't want to be owning the vehicle when this happens.

The 7 speed DSG... well that's another story for a different thread.

We are now starting to see some MY11 118tsi's with serious engine issues, these cars all had the software updates done at factory, it clearly hasn't made a difference. So it hasn't been resolved I'm not sure why the tread says Resovled!

It's been doing this for a while now, car is currently at the mechanic but thought I would put it to some of you to see if anyone has experienced a similar problem. The engine light is on and occasionally the oil light as well (even after the oil had been changed), the car won't rev past 3000rpm and the feeling when driving seems to tell me that the cars computer has imposed this limit on the car for some reason (safety mode?).

Any experience on this issue or advice would be greatly appreciated. If my usual mechanic is unable to diagnose the problem what are some recommended vw mechanics in melbournes south east (i'm in noble park) that are experienced and fairly priced?

This is generally caused by an issue in Supercharger control. A common fault being the intake control flap what closes off the intake between the air filter and the turbo to direct all intake air into the supercharger.

This can also be caused by a failed supercharger clutch which keeps dragging the supercharger.

A good workshop out your way I can recommend is Aussie Tune in Dandenong.

Sounds like the engine is going into limp mode. What engine are we talking about here? If its a 118TSI then say no more.
