That's bad luck anders; sorry to hear of your troubles.

I don't believe your warranty (engine or otherwise) will be extended. You might want to consider shelling out for the extended warranty option. As for reduced power, new engines should be running the same software your old engine was running post-24S4, so there should be no performance issues. And no-one on this forum (or any other I'm aware of) has experienced an engine failure with a new 118 engine manufactured since 24S4 was introduced.

On the Monday norning on the way to work it started missing and the exhaust warning light came on. While idling at traffic lights the EPC light also appeared and power was almont gone.
I called the workshop and they suggested coming in for a scan to test the systems. Multiple failures were detected, the primary fault being in cylinder 1. Strangely enough they said I should drop it in for more tests but could not do it striaght away. Being concerned that the car was being damaged, I questioned if it should be driven to which they said it would not get any worse. The car ran like a dog and fuel consumption poor with the exhaust warning light now a permanent fixture.
I needed a loan car for which they organised and the car was taken in on Thursday. A phone call has now confirmed that an engine repalcement is required, as there was very little compression in the cylinder but VWA is requesting more tests (fuel mainly).
The dealer I believe Kwew this would be a requirement, but think that this is costing VW a heap of money and will check everything before a new engine is authorised.

I've had the recall done and I got a misfire at cold idle. I also had issues with the engine stalling out. Told VW about it and they couldn't pull the codes up. They performed another reflash, which has fixed the high-ish idle at cold start, but the misfire has returned.

I run nothing but premiuim unleaded.

Why does the thread title say the issue has been resolved? It sure doesn't seem like it has. I'm not buying the "damage was done before the service campaign fix" either.

I'm really disappointed. I had my heart set on a 118 TSI and was probably going to sign on the line today. But after reading this thread and plenty of the others out there I'd be crazy to purchase this car

The thread title says it is resolved as there hasn't been a single report of an engine manufactured since the 24S4 update to have failed. If anyone has any information to the contrary, please let us know.

I'm confused. The thread title suggests that the update resolved the issue. But anders for example has had an engine failure with the update. However you are saying that engines manufactured since 24S4 are ok? So for the car I am looking at I should look for a build date after approx June and you believe it would be ok?

Due to the type of problem that this is, there would have been quite a few engines with physical damage but which are still running "fine". The update resolves the issue which was causing the physical damage to the engines, but it obviously can't fix any damage which already occurred. This damage can eventually lead to loss of compression in a cylinder as anders has noted.

But as I said, there hasn't been a single report (that anyone from this forum is aware of) of an engine manufactured since 24S4 having a failure (or for that matter, manufacturered slightly before but flashed immediately on arrival to the country and before being driven with local fuel).

So yeah, anything manufactured since June 2010 should be fine.

Thanks Corey. I really like the car but have had worry free motoring for quite a few years with a Toyota and I didn't want to lose that!

Hi, I wouldn't be too worried mate. My car was delivered on the 28th May 2010 and had the software update done as soon as it got to the dealer. So it's only been driven in Aus with the update. I haven't had any issues with the engine. There hasn't been any reports of engine failure with the software update done from new.

If you hadn't of read about it on the forums you probably wouldn't have even heard about these failures and you would still be happy to buy one. I wouldn't let it worry you too much.

I just had a interval service at Wangara VW (brilliant service btw), I originally bought the car at Melville and had the 1000kms service done there - long story short I was NEVER informed about the recall!!!!! Not happy I can tell you.. I should have been on here more often to find out I guess.
Also I had/have a 'squeak' when I accelerate (main reason for having the interval service other than the ESP and Airbag Error display)... Its the waterpump rubbing on the turbo...
Tash at VW Wangara was great and has ordered a new waterpump but it will be a few weeks, has also agreed to provide me with a loan car as I did have to take today off work just to get the service done.
VW and Melville both have my address... I get the magazine and also got all the after sales crap sent to me.. WHY NO INFORMATION ABOUT THE RECALL???

Bel, I notice you have a 2010 MY11 Golf. What month was it built?

Firstly, this was never a recall. Next, you only receive recall or service campaign information if it applies to your car.
