    Well I was told by the VW trainers, a few VW master techs that if its any recall eg. 24S4 Reprogram, 24M5 Fuel Pressure Sensor etc, that the sticker should be fitted & service book should be marked & stamped.

    Alot of techs don't do the book though. Either forget or are just lazy

    logger: Your explanation is quite interesting! I haven't got my Golf yet, but I've noticed that my father's 2L Ford Focus also has a very rough, clattery idle when it's cold, which I guess would be for similar emissions-compliance tricks.

    nicandlance: I agree, from what I've read Volkswagen's handling of this situation hasn't been ideal. Unfortunately, the "deny that there's a problem until you've fixed it" attitude is very common these days, and it's hard to believe that any other large car company would behave differently.

    Just read an article on carnews.com.au that stated that 6700 Australian delivered 118TSI Golfs and Jettas are being recalled for a faulty knock sensor that caused a number of engine failures .....

    Its an article on the new Polo GTI using a 132kw version of the 1.4 Twincharge motor .... see a thread in the Polo section.

    Just had mine done. The service campaign sticker was placed in the boot beside the compliance plate.

    Thats where they state to fit them, but for convenience, the A-pillar is where its at.

    As you can clearer see what has been done as soon as you open the door.

    I use to fit them in the boot, but the boss said "its not easily noticable & in most cases the boot is filled with crap & you have to remove it all just to check or fit a sticker"

    Deny what problem? Has anyone taken their car in with a engine failure and been turned away by VW saying there isn't a problem or have VW each time replaced the engine or performed a repair?

    Seeing as how VW have fixed every car with this problem, have released a software upgrade for cars that might be prone to this problem and have not covered up the problem I really fail to see how you can come to the conclusion that they "denied any problem".

    The engineers in Germany are not mind readers, they can't fix a car after a call comes in from Australia about one failure and release a software update overnight. It wouldn't be until they have a number of failures with the same fault that they could really start work on the problem as it may be a one off failure that occurs in all cars. The problem needs to be investigated, engines need to be sent back to Germany and it takes time to find what is an obscure problem by going through available data.

    Maybe the people who are unhappy with this approach should buy a Holden, Ford or Hyundai where they just throw parts at the car until it's fixed (or covered up until next time), I'd rather the Volkswagen approach where the problem is identified properly and a lasting fix put in place even if it takes longer to achieve.

    Having had a manufacturer deny a fault on a car I've owned, this all sounds quite right. More often than not, denials are coming from dealerships rather than manufacturers and usually through ignoranace of the problem and a default stance of 'of course there isn't a problem'.

    For my personal experience of a design fault in the clutch plate, I went to 3 different dealerships and told 3 different stories plus then a fourth story from the manufacturer. In the end there was never officially a fault but there was a clutch kit that could be put into cars of those who complained and the clutch was removed from production for the next model cycle.

    So which manufacturer are you speaking of exactly, from your personal experience?

    Subaru. I had an Impreza RS. The dealers, if you're interested were SVM Lindfield, Tom Kerr West Ryde and Paramatta Subaru. Oh and NEVER get a car from SVM - had other issues with them relating to pre-delivery and out-and-out lying.
