    Hi Guys

I'm joining the club. I'm the second owner of a 2010 TSI118 which I purchased in February 2015 from a Ford dealership. Just found out today that 2 of my cylinders are gone. Even though I purchased and serviced it at a Ford dealership, can I ask VWA to replace the engine?? It's just ticked over 100,000kms.

you can ask but you'll need to show a full service history and proof the correct lubricants were used.

The worst that can happen is they will deny the claim. They'll probably also want a diagnostic fee of around $1k.

Suggest you do some homework first and read up on your statutory warranty rights.

I took the approach where i pushed VWA for email confirmation, which they gave me that they would pay for the diagnostic fee before i took my car into the dealer. So from the outset i wanted confirmation that VWA would pay all costs otherwise i wasn't prepared to take it to the dealer not knowing what would happen. Its ridiculous for them to give you no certainty in what could end up being '000's of dollars of repairs. They confirmed via email before i took the car to the dealer that they would diagnosis the problem at VWA cost and put a goodwill claim in and if i wasn't prepared to pay the outcome they would put the car back together again (which cant be done) and I could take my car else where.

Which reading between the lines now I think meant that they were prepared to fix it. I then had certainty that i would not be out of pocket and had some control of my destiny.

I was prepared to keep hassling them until i got confirmation first, i was just lucky that they came to the party after my first initial email to them.

So I got the call today, low compression in cylinder 3 and 4. They are pulling it down tomorrow and will submit the goodwill
repair claim to Volkswagen. I'm kinda sweating on this but I'm confident they will do the right thing as I'll be ready to upgrade in 18 months time and if they look after me I'll purchase a new vw from them based on my experience so far. They have arrranged me a loan car to collect tomorrow and I have to admit since they start they have been amazing. I emailed them and they arranged a free tow and diagnosis and VW even arranged with the dealership to carry out all the work and to submit the goodwill claim based on what they find. I know cylinder 4 was the worst of it as that was the one piling up the plug the other 3 were still ok. If you're reading this VWA please fix my car 😅.

That's great news! Can you please tell me, are you the original owner and did you buy/service it at a VW dealership?

Well so far I'm impressed... 10 minutes after sending a strong worded and confident email to the VWA Directors, I had a response from one of them, Jason Bradshaw - Director of Customer Experience. He wrote that a member of his team would be contacting me. A few hours later a member of the team - a Customer Experience Embassador - called me to get my story. Car was towed to VW, diagnostic report will be made, free of charge if it proves it is a faulty engine. Will repair 100% of the costs. Just picked up my hire car which I will keep until my car is fixed. Great customer service so far. If all of this is successful, I will have faith in the brand again and continue to purchase VWs!

Just a quick note to thank everyone who has shared their advice in this thread.

My 2012 118TSI had the same symptoms as others have described, and low compression in cylinder 4 was identified by an independent mechanic. My car had done 40K, I'm the second owner, and the services we're completed either on time or slightly late (and not all done at VW). I went to the dealer with a lot of information at hand from this thread, ready to plead my case - but before I'd had a chance to even say "it's a known issue" the VW dealership offered to diagnose the issue (at no cost). Once diagnosed they then put in a claim to VWA, and within 24 hours VWA had approved 100% parts and labour.

    Thanks again!
