Gear indicator on MFD

Apparently if you're the type of driver who doesn't know how fast you're going, so you set a speed warning, and/or the type of driver that doesn't fill up their tank until it's running dry, the speed warning and fuel tank empty warnings remove the gear change indicator from your display (I went back to page 1 to see what the original complaint was about).

I still really think that this is a non-issue. If you aren't skilled enough of a driver to know what speed you're doing, then maybe you shouldn't be using "manual mode" and simply be concentrating on keeping the car under the speed limit and looking out for that next fuel station

i don't have the speed warnings turned on, what a pain that would be, petrol, well never had a warning come up, fill up just before it gets to the red lines.

I don't look at the gear indicator, but then i always drive in manual mode also so never need to change between drive and manual mode.

I've also noticed if you use the left and right arrows on the RHS of the wheel, it will also remove the clock and gear display temporarily.

If that's the case, Why would VW put a manual mode on their gearboxes if you don't know how to drive?

Again, I want to know if you can keep the thread on track Corey, seeing as you yourself are a moderator, instead of trying to tell people how they should drive (yet again). If YOU think this is a non issue, drive a DSG and switch from S to M mode when the display isn't showing and see if you can row DOWN the gears to 2nd without hitting 1st or being in the right gear when you're doing some spirited driving into a corner.

IF I drive and start in M, I know what gear I am in. But that is not the issue.

I have owned a DSG car, and as I've said before, I haven't had the issue you have. Sorry, but I haven't.

Also, each of the DSG cars I've been in, the gear indicator is almost always present.
Maybe this is more related to the 118TSI rather than the GTI/GTD/R?

Whichever car it is related to, I want the gear and time to remain on while in any screen on the MFD. Why can't this happen?

Maybe someone with VCDS can help here. Logger, where are you?

It's possible that there are different software versions. It's maybe possible that since the Trendline and Comfortline models don't have paddles they figured the priority would be low. There are numerous reasons I guess. But I'm thinking that with VCDS you could poke around and see if there is any way of changing this, or determine if there is a software level difference between the cars which do it and don't etc.

This all seems strange to me ozgti. My car does not do this. In fact my Setup screen is inhibited when driving. Sounds to me like something is amiss with your MFD setup or coding. If I change display modes while driving the time and gear disappear briefly, but only for about 5 seconds to highlight the selected mode. Then it reverts to time and gear on the top line. Also noticed that popping a warning forces the time and gear display to return if I intentionally remove it. Do this for example by opening the drivers door to the first notch while driving to get the door open warning. This instantaneously brings the time/gear display back.

Changing between D, T or S modes has no effect on whether the time/gear display is there for me. Have to work tonight but will take a closer look at it for you tomorrow.

PS I have not read all this thread, just jumping in at the end as I do not have time to go through it all.

And this is exactly the same as my 03/10 build GTI. +1 that ozgti's MFD may be operating in a different mode, or else have a fault.

ok last night i wanted to see what happened when changing screens and sure enough the time and gear indicator dissapears when you press on the left or right arrow button to show the radio or cd track currently playing or other options. It does come back up again though.

I looked through the menu and there does not seem to be a way to change it, so unless it can be done via vag com you are stuck with it.

Maybe best bet is to ring your vw dealer and ask them also.
