Thread: First Golf R 420 hp (315kw) build in the world - Australian exclusive!

I'm considering doing a Stage II upgrade, but I'd like to leave my options open for a future migration to Stage III if possible.

    Downpipe:
On the 2.0T STG III - S3, TTS, R page, it mentions that a Stage 3 S3/TTS/GOLF R - Divorced Downpipe is required but not included. The cost is $2495 but it doesn't mention whether the high-flow cat and adaptor is included in that price as it is with the "regular APR downpipe".

Can the Stage III downpipe be used with a Stage II upgrade, or is it only applicable for the Stage III kits?
Also, does the S3 downpipe and highflow cat fit on the R?

    Intake:
Is there any advantage to the Stage II Carbonio intake over the Stage I intake? From the looks of things, the stock R piping looks to be quite large and restriction free as it is, and obviously if I went to the Stage III kit later, the Stage II pipe would be discarded anyway.

As a side question to this, the R's engine cover looks to be substantially larger than the GTI's engine cover. It appears that even the intake pipes are covered by a single plastic piece. Can the engine cover still be installed if a Carbonio Stage I or Stage II intake is installed?

    Intercooler:
You've stated that the R's intercooler is smaller than the S3's intercooler. Does this mean the R's intercooler is the one used in the Pirelli?
The APR Intercooler seems like a good option if this is the case. I notice that it's designed to connect to the OEM pipes.

There are several forum members (including APR customers) who have mentioned that the OEM pipes are actually a cause of restriction and that changing them even without changing the intercooler can equate to a 3 to 5kw improvement atw. It has been recommended to me to use these two products:
    Neuspeed HI-FLO Air Charge Pipe
    Neuspeed HI-FLO Turbo Discharge Conversion

What is your opinion on this topic? Do you believe that replacing the OEM pipes to and from the intercooler is worthwhile, and if so, which products do you use?

    Thanks in advance
Downpipe: $2495 includes the full three sections - divorced downpipe / Cat section / Adapter to catback. If you go to Stage 3 & have the K04 front section we will include it as a trade in with your kit!

Intake: What we have done is modify the water lines & intake pipe a little so we can use the TSI intake head & filter in this case. I understand that this will be available as a production part in the future.

The airboxes are identical - S3 Golf V & Golf R, so no size difference there.

Stage 2 pipe is only for the Golf 6 GTI cam chain motor, not applicable (at this stage) for the FSI motor (golf R).

Intercooler: - certainly our car only has the stock GTI plastic tanked intercooler. The Pirelli & S3 ran an alloy tanked version (both slightly different) so it seems that the R is hobbled from this point slightly. Cold air is good air!

The "other pipes" - have not seen any data on testing - I have seen bench flow testing and there was no increase in flow (and no increase in diameter through the entire pipe - this was MKV pipes) (really because there is no restriction, especially on the pressure side). I would love to see some data that shows what a difference they make!

No, engine has not been apart - the build thread is in the links. So yes its ECU tuning + add on parts.

I don't know what your problem is but 90% of your threads are attacking APR, me or anyone who uses the product.

We sell & develop products for the Golf R, what better way is there to do that & test them apart from getting a car & doing it ourselves? We are not an internet shop that sells stuff & "hope" it fits.
    Good one Guy....

This thread is an absolute bonus to all of us out there who want to see the score on the board as far as your cars are concerned..
What better way than to your results after bolt on's and remaps!

    Keep up the good work!

Next for me the divorced downpipe and intake, and perhaps the intercooler upgrade.

WTF, I havent logged on in a while..... that thing is freakin amazing...Leave it to Guy to do the serious biz...nice to see the Alcons on there. Im looking at trading in my Pirelli on one of these bad boys. My question to Guy or anyone in the know over there is
    A. when we go this route with tuning the car, ie 315kw at the motor. what is the cost factor of building up a manual box in the R, over a DSG.? Because of the fact that you can put in a twin plate clutch etc and be rest assured that launching the car at the rack all day is not giving you the "i wonder how bad that was vibe".!.
Having a DSG now and having come from a manual Id be happy with either.
But I guess I just wonder over the long run which is best, I had a buddy with a heavy twin in his car and I loved the fact that you could barely push the pedal in but when you stepped off..it bit very hard.... lol, just the effect Id like in an R.
I know its busy over there but please if you get a chance let us know how any clutch \ gearbox improvements go.

Stupid question, I assume the latest version of the DSG is no longer limited to handle 350nm of torque?

Not sure? It was an extremely conservative torque limit though.. typically German. Many MKV's run more than that with no issue as we know.
