    Exclamation Fire Extinguisher? MK6

I understand its a requirement to have a fire extinguisher within arms reach if you want to race a car around a track.

For the benefit of all mk6 drivers, can everyone please share any information about fire extinguisher modifications. Ideally i'd be after something that requires minimal modifications.. Perhaps a company makes an easily mountable clip?

Here is an example of a mod in a polo http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f127...her-48191.html

Requirements for a fire extinguisher vary from event to event.
A lot of Track "Drive Days" don't require them at all.
Having said that, they're a good idea anyway.
Most extinguishers come with a mounting bracket.
If required for a Track event, the mounting has to be VERY secure,i.e.,no self tappers holding the bracket in.
On some cars[including my S3] you can mount them under the driver's seat on the actual seat frame.
Completely out of sight, but close at hand.

I've just got one of those basic ones from Supercheap which are quite lightweight, tarzan gripped a length of velcro hook on the bracket and stuck it very successfully under my drivers seat to the carpet. Been there for two years, probably needs renewing to keep the charge up!

Warning - MK5 specific (but worth a look to see if the mk6 is the same).
I put a couple of short metal self-tappers through the vertical plane above the 'transmission' tunnel in front of the rear seats.
So you could still sit a person in the middle since their legs would be splayed to either side of the tunnel.
I had my son's baby seat there, so his feet wouldn't hit it anyway

Give the base of your back seat a vertical yank, it should unclip at the front and you'll be able to see that there's nothing there for you to damage if you screw it in high enough. You may need some small washers depending on the size of the holes in your extinguisher holder.

I'm not sure they would have bothered re-engineering this seating section for the mk6, but this position is very easy to reach when you're strapped in tightly. I took a photo but can't find it!

On page 291 of the manual it says, "A fire extinguisher may be located in a holder in the footwell in frot of the front passenger seat." There's no obvious place to put it there.. so i'm guessing this is an accessory... Does anyone know where to find this?

The white Mk6 that belongs to European Autotech at Mona Vale has an extinguisher mounted in front of the front passenger seat. it is a good set-up. Derek was prepared to make one for me so he might be prepared to make a few.

It is basically just some aluminium angle (75 x 75mm?) with a few snips and holes so not difficult to make. My biggest problem is that I don't have any of the triple point tools for undoing the seat bolts. Bloody VW! Why couldn't they just use torx or allen head? I have plenty of those.

I should also have taken some pix.
If you dig a hole and it is in the wrong place, digging it deeper isn't going to help.

That might be acceptable at a track day until someone crashes with such a set-up but it will not pass scrutineering at a supersprint or tarmac rally event. Though not specifically excluded zip ties usually won't either if the scrutineer is a hardass. Self tapers can be suspect as well because vibration and movement causes them to work loose in sheet metal. The bolts at the front of the seat rails are ideal; load bearing and unlikely to loosen off.

The mount should be fire proof as well as securely anchored. According to the CAMS manual the mount needs to withstand a deceleration force of 25g. Good zip ties can take the load, velcro can't. Neither is fireproof.

VW have a mount that rivets to the underside of the passenger seat. You screw/rivet the fire extinguisher to this mount and it sits under the seat but easy to get at. You can't use this if you have the seat drawers.

isnt there a holder in the boot as well? in my GTI theres a strap for what seems to be a fire extinguisher....

therefore on a track day, if theres a fire in your car; pull over and get out of it immediately, then go to the boot and get the extinguisher thats in there.... put the fire out then run
