    External side mirror knob query

    Hey guys.

A few weeks ago the rotary knob that adjusts the external side mirrors snapped off while i was using it.

I managed to superglue it back on and it feels like normal (although i'm very careful when i use the knob now!).

Just wondering, the external mirror demister icon is on the top left but the rotary knob only locks into the top middle position (hope you know what i mean). Is this normal? Should the rotary knob lock in to the top left or top middle?

Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question - but your answers will be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers!

Just checked mine and it goes to top middle, not to where the icon is, so I guess that's normal.

I'd never tried to turn the demister on, and I can see why yours broke off — it takes far too much pressure to turn it past the R or L detents and it feels flimsy (as do several other plastic bits on the Mk VI.)

Thanks idle! I've had problems with my dealer in the past so i didn't want to go back to them if i didn't have to. That's also the reason why i decided to superglue the rotary knob back on rather than take the car back to them.

What other plastic parts on your car feel flimsy?

The problem you have now is that you won't get it fixed under warranty nor will it be noted on your service history. Superglue won't last long before it breaks again.

The window switches — all seven of them (the finger grips are thin, sharp-edged, uncomfortable and look like future problems), the sunglasses holder in the headlining and its catch, the plastic tie hooks in the boot, the external mirrors (already had the lens fall out of one, fortunately the heater wire held it off the road and it didn't smash in the wind, only chipped a little on one edge) the driver's side hidey-hole in the dash and its lid, the engine cover (thought I'd break it getting it off but in the end didn't), the lid of the screen-wash reservoir — that's some I can think of, no doubt more will turn up in time.

All fairly minor things and probably no more than most other cars in this plasticised age, but little irritations add up.

How did the lens in the external mirror fall out? Maybe someone knocked it while your car was parked somewhere?

Fortunately the only two (very minor) problems i've had so far have been one of the rear light globes busting after a couple of weeks of receiving the car and the external mirror rotary knob snapping off. Fingers crossed nothing else goes wrong. Compared to my sister's MkV though my MkVI feels (in terms of tactile quality) much better.

Which golf did you get idle?

It appeared to have not been properly fitted in the first place -- the car had less than 100K's on it at the time.

Since it's an expensive bit of glass and my hands are clumsy nowadays I had the dealer re-fit it and it seems OK now. Once properly fitted it was well out of focus, which is what made me think it wasn't right to begin with.

    Car is TDI103.
