    exhaust warning light

    I have a 2009 Golf 118 tsi.
    49000kms. manual gearbox
It has been running very well. A few days ago it started to idle rough, sort of a lumpy idle and you feel it's going to stall. idle revs are 750 -800 rpm.
Then I noticed that the exhaust fault light flashes at low revs then stays on when the revs pick up. there's no jerking at high revs.

Any idea what the problem is?

Do you mean the ECU light ?
It can refer to one or multiple errors recorded by various sensors all over your engine bay and beyond.....not necessarily an exhaust fault.

Get the car scanned via VCDS or at a workshop to make sure what exactly the issue is.

It could be a IAT sensor , tps , faulty ignition unit etc.

If the engine light is flashing its mean you have a misfiring. Possible one of four coil packs is faulty. Its not expencive. Volkswagen used to have a recall for all four coil packs replacment. Give them a quick call. you can find a faulty coil pack, if you disconect each coil pack one by one, and look for engine running change. The faulty coil pack, if disconected will not affect an engine "work".
