Angry EPC lights up the dash

    Hi

Almost home today when I lost power in the GTI and the dash light EPC came up , feels like its running on 3 cyl .

Book says I should go asap to repair centre , maybe a coil pack ? .

I am wondering is it ok to drive 10km to mechanic or should I get a flat bed .

    Still got that TT?

Pull the coilpacks out of the Golf and drop them in the TT one at a time. See if one has failed. If so, buy a coilpack and chuck it in. TT coilpacks wont go in the Golf unfortunately.

Generally coil packs are ok until the engine is under load and higher in the rev range (but not always) However:

Is it rough to idle? Try pulling one coil pack out at a time. The one that you pull and the idle doesn't get worse is your dead coil pack. I have four spare coil packs and located inner west of Sydney.

    To be clear.
    1. Turn engine off
    2. remove coil pack lead
    3. start car
4 sound worse? replace lead and move to the next one

ps - I keep a spare coil pack in the boot of the car. I did the same with my Audi as well

I found that once one coil pack went all 4 needed doing eventually. Get the latest ones, they seem to hold up better with all the heat under bonnet. Scared me the first time it happened, thought the engine was a goner!

Thanks Russ I will check that out seems odd since car has only done 34,000km , maybe stage 1 is a factor .

Your right about scary , that little engine icon hit the dash first and thoughts of blown turbo or worse , than the EPC came up and I stopped pronto .

My first one went at about the same km, stage 1 as well. I have a legend mechanic, he said rest would go, I only changed one. Sure enough 2 more went over the following 6 months so I just changed the 4th. After that it was all good until I sold it at 89000km, the newer ones are more resilient I believe.
